Managements possess inside information about future earnings of firms and this information is not being made fully available to investors. We examines the information content of management forecasts. Specifically, we address two issues for the information content of management forecasts: (1) Do management forecasts disclosed according to Regulation FD have informativeness to both of investors and analysts? (2) Whether the information content of the management forecasts are affected by the forecasts’ credibility. We obtained an initial sample of 1,034 management forecasts disclosed according to Regulation FD in the period 11/1/2002 to 12/31/2007, individually. We restrict sample firms to non-financial firms and delete forecasts that were unsuitable for the empirical tests. Finally, we use 381 firm-year samples in the analysis. The results are summarized as follows: First, management forecasts are associated with significant positive abnormal stock returns, on average, This is true only when the prior forecasts’ credibility has been high, but the relationship is no longer significant when credibility has previously been low, Second, management forecasts which exceed expected earnings (good news) are on average associated with significant abnormal positive stock returns after the release of the forecasts, but no significant abnormal stock returns are observed when bad news is released, Considering credibility variable in the model, some results are not consistent with former literatures, However, controlling information effects contained IR, we can verify that the credibility of management forecasts is considered as a very important facter in investors’ decision making, Third, analysts react in accordance with management forecasts’ sign, In other words, when management forecasts exceed previously released analysts’ predictions, the analysts tend to revise their forecasts upwards and vice versa, Fourth, analysts differently react as the credibility is high or not. Wnen management forecasts arc good news and management credibility is high, then analysts revise their forecasts upwards significantly, However, when management forecasts arc bad news, analysts have changed their forecasts regardless of the management’s credibility.
