A Study on Problems and Improvement Plan of Guide Signs at Urban Railway Stations from Universal Design Perspective

Urban railway is in charge of covering diverse users from the transportation vulnerable to foreigners as well as ordinary citizens as the most available transportation in downtown. Current capital area and metropolitan rapid transits are operated by various management agencies and have every different standard of guide system for their users. Considering that the same users flexibly use urban railways of the different management agencies, standardization is needed. In this respect, this study, as a basic research of national standard guideline development of subway guide sign, was aimed to lay the groundwork for convenience improvement of urban railway by way of design development in the scale of covering various users from universal design perspective. To begin with analyzing Seoul subway guidelines of the first and second period, distribution of guide sign in the early years of urban railway construction which has kept its foundation until now was understood. In addition, through field investigation of design professional manpower on 29 stations of domestic capital area and metropolitan rapid transits, 6 kinds of user flow subdivided by purposes and types of user’s visit were categorized to deduce problems of guide system. According to findings, this paper proposed a concept of the standard guide system, which is "consistency of information", composed of functional and visual consistency. In order to be consistent in functional aspect, followings were proposed; standards for 3 stage sign system, information chunk, location and height of the sign. In addition, visual standards were suggested as follows; systems of symbol, arrow, color, typeface, pictogram, multilingual presentation and module.
