The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the lithium titanate material is Li4Ti5O12. 4. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the lithium titanate material is selected from the group consisting of LiTi2O4, Li2TiO3, LixTiyO4, and combinations thereof. 5. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the second active material extends to the first lateral edge of the negative electrode and the first active material extends to the first lateral edge of the positive electrode. 6. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the wound cell element is generally cylindrical and the region is a top or bottom of the generally cylindrical wound cell element. 7. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the wound cell element has a central longitudinal axis and the second active material does not extend beyond the first active material in the longitudinal direction for at least a portion of the wound cell element. 8. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the first active material is LiCoO2. 9. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the battery is installed in an implantable medical device. 10. The lithium-ion battery of claim 1, wherein the first active material near the first lateral edge of the positive electrode extends beyond the second active material along an entire length of the first lateral edge of the negative electrode in an axial direction relative to the wound cell element. 11. A lithium-ion battery comprising: a wound element comprising a first electrode and a second electrode, wherein the first electrode comprises a first current collector and a first active material and the second electrode comprises a second current collector and a second active material;wherein the second active material is selected from the group consisting of TiO2, MoO2, Nb2O5, V6O13, Li6Fe2O3, and combinations thereof;wherein the second current collector comprises aluminum;wherein the first and second current collectors each include a leading edge, a trailing edge, and two lateral edges;wherein the first active material is configured to be doped and undoped with lithium cations during cycling of the battery;wherein the wound cell element comprises a region where a first lateral edge of the first electrode is provided proximate a first lateral edge of the second electrode and the first active material near the first lateral edge of the first electrode extends beyond the second active material in an axial direction relative to the wound cell element near the first lateral edge of the second electrode for at least a portion of the wound element; andwherein the first electrode is a positive electrode and the second electrode is a negative electrode. 12. The lithium-ion battery of claim 11, wherein the second active material has a potential that is approximately 1.5 volts versus a lithium reference electrode. 13. The lithium-ion battery of claim 11, wherein the current collector of the second electrode does not extend beyond the current collector of the first electrode in the longitudinal direction for at least a portion of the wound element. 14. The lithium-ion battery of claim 11, wherein the wound element has a generally cylindrical shape. 15. The lithium-ion battery of claim 11, wherein the first electrode and the second electrode each include a leading edge, and the first active material extends beyond the second active material for at least a portion of the leading edges. 16. The lithium-ion battery of claim 11, wherein the first electrode and the second electrode each include a trailing edge, and the first active material extends beyond the second active material for at least a portion of the trailing edges. 17. The lithium-ion battery of claim 11, wherein the first active material is LiCoO2. 18. The lithium-ion battery of claim 11, wherein the battery is installed in an implantable medical device. 19. The lithium-ion battery of claim 11, wherein the first active material near the first lateral edge of the first electrode extends beyond the second active material in an axial direction relative to the wound cell element along an entire length of the first lateral edge of the negative electrode. 20. A lithium-ion battery comprising: a wound cell element comprising a positive electrode and a negative electrode the positive electrode comprising a current collector and a first active material and the negative electrode comprising a current collector and a second active material, the second active material having a potential that is greater than approximately 1.0 V versus a lithium reference electrode;wherein the current collector of the negative electrode comprises aluminum;wherein the first active material is capable of being doped and undoped with lithium cations during cycling of the battery;wherein the positive electrode has a leading edge, a trailing edge, and first and second opposed lateral edges; andwherein the negative electrode has a leading edge, a trailing edge, and first and second opposed lateral edges;wherein the positive electrode and negative electrode are arranged such that the leading edges, trailing edges, and lateral edges of the positive and negative electrodes are generally aligned; andwherein the first active material extends beyond the second active material in an axial direction relative to the wound cell element along at least a portion of an edge region in the wound cell element, the edge region comprising at least one of the aligned first lateral edges and the aligned second lateral edges of the positive and negative electrodes. 21. The lithium-ion battery of claim 20, wherein the second active material has an average potential that is greater than approximately 1.5 volts versus a lithium reference electrode. 22. The lithium-ion battery of claim 20, wherein the second active material does not extend to the edge of the negative electrode along at least a portion of the edge region of the wound cell element. 23. The lithium-ion battery of claim 22, wherein the first active material extends beyond the second active material along a central longitudinal axis of the wound cell element. 24. The lithium-ion battery of claim 20, wherein the first active material is LiCoO2. 25. The lithium-ion battery of claim 20, wherein the battery is installed in an implantable medical device. 26. The lithium-ion battery of claim 20, wherein the first active material extends beyond the second active material in an axial direction relative to the wound cell element along an entire length of one of the lateral edges of the negative electrode.
