Coupled nonlinear dynamical systems as a generalization of low-dimensional nonlinear dynamical systems have recently been studied actively. Low-dimensional systems have been typically studied as a paradigm for dissipative systems, where many interesting phenomena such as chaos, critical scaling and the universality at chaos transition, where the universal routes to chaos have been found. However, many physical systems exhibit not only temporal but also spatial complex dynamics, where dynamical degree of freedom involved are generally larger than those for typical low-dimensional systems. Therefore, it is necessary to study systems with coupled nonlinear dynamical elements in order to understand tcooperative dynamical pattern formation in typicla physical systems.
We study cooperative dynamics of a coupled network of la small number of low-dimensional nonlinear elements, in particular, logistic maps, circle maps, and oscillators. First, we study the scaling properties in the bifurcation structure of coupled logistic maps with the renormalization group method, focusing on the critical set associated with chaos onset. We also study the coupled circle map, or torus maps. focusing on the model-locking, synchronization, and chaos transition. There systems can be explored using the standard techniques of nonlinear dynamics such as the graphical method, the stability analysis, scaling and renormalization theory, the bifurcation method, and numerical nonlinear analysis algorithms. Finally we study arrays of Josephson junctions, which can be modeled nicely by a system of coupled oscillators. Therefore, we can apply nonlinear techniques to Josephson junction arrays to explore current-voltage dynamics as the dc current and the magnetic field are varied. We expect that this approach to coupled systems can contribute much to the understanding of fluid turbulence, superconductivity, neural networks, and reaction diffusion systems which involve complex patterns of spatio-temporal dynamics.
