Molecular interactions play an important role in the study ofpolymeric systems. They are highly correlated with the properties of polymer systemssuch as filler/matrix systems, blend systems, and adhesion. One of the most importantmolecular interactions is the hydrogen bonding. Therefore, for hydrogen-bondingsystems, it is crucial to understand the effect of hydrogen bonding on the properties ofpolymers. In this study, poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)(PHEMA) was taken as amodel compound with the degree of stereospecificity as a structural variable. AfterPHEMA samples with differing tacticities were prepared by using UV polymerization, anionic polymerization, and radical polymerization techniques, their microstructures wereinvestigated mainly by using various NMR techniques such as 1D 1H and 13C NMRmethods and 2D 1H-1H COSY techniques. Also 2D NOESY spectra were measured asa function of the mixing time so that they provide direct evidences on theconformational states of tactic PHEMA polymers. All the NMR peaks were assigned.Using the concentrations of the pentads obtained from the carbonyl carbon region of13C NMR spectra, statistical models for the polymerization mechanism were tested. Itwas found that the PHEMA chains are more readily described by using the first-orderMarkovian statistics rather than the Bernoullian statistics. From the NOESY data,NOE intensities for the crosspeaks were determined and their buildup rates werecritacally tested the validity and then were used to extract informations for theinter-atomic distances in the tactic PHEMA polymers. Among others, the states ofside chains were shown to be very different between isotactic and syndiotactic PHEMAsamples. Also vibrational spectroscopic techniques were used to elucidate the role ofhydrogen bonding in determining the conformational state of a molecule. In detail, theconformational states were be investigated as a function of temperature and thecorresponding conformational energies were obtained and discussed. Then variousmodeling techniques were applied to further explore the detailed states of the tacticPHEMA samples. As a result of the study, we believe that the understanding on thePHEMA itself be fundamentally increased and furthermore the methodology becomeapplicable to the studies of many polymer systems with the stereospecific microstructureas a structural variable.
