To rule out health risk for Korean by heavy metals in animal oriental drugs, maximum residue limit for each heavy metals, Pb, Cd, As and Hg was proposed. For the purpose of them, sample preparation methods for heavy metals were examined and the residual amount of each heavy metal was monitored for domestic and imported animal oriental drugs. For the analysis of Pb, Cd and As, graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry (GF-AAS) and inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS) were applied after pretreatment microwave digestion. In case of Hg, mercury analyzer was used. Total one hundred forty five samples consisted with eight kinds of animal oriental drugs like Ostreae Testa, Cicadidae Periostracum, Serpentis Fel, Toad Venom, Scorpion, Scolopendrae Corpus, Trogopterorum Faeces, Gekko were purchased at Kyeung-dong and other oriental drug market in Korea and China. The contamination levels were Pb 0.158∼14.692 mg/kg, Cd 0.002∼1.817mg/kg, As 0.002∼6.574mg/kg and Hg 0.168∼0.372mg/kg for above animal oriental drugs. The hazard indices based en PTWI(Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake) were in ranges 3.96×$10^{-10}$ ∼ 3.17×$10^{-1}$ which is safe. However tile hazard index of arsenic in Ostreae Test, Cicadidae Periostracum, and lead in Trogopterorum Faeces were in tile range of 0.1 ∼ 0.3 which might be needed to be regulated. The acceptable maximum residual amount of each heavy metal which does not risk human health was calculated based on PTWI of WHO. The acceptable maximum residual amount for cadmium and arsenic in Ostreae Testa, cadmium and mercury in Cicadidae Periostracum, and in Trogopterorum Faeces were calculated as under 10ppm. However it is not needed to set MRL for Serpentis Fel, Toad Venom and Gekko due to very low hazard index and low intake level.
