Purpose of Research
This research concerns the development and experiment of multiple autonomous mobile robots for collaborative surveillance tasks. Each of the robots has only limited sensing, computation, and communication capabilities. However, by collaborating with other robots, they can still perform useful tasks. The task that we are going to consider is collaborative mapping and exploration inside buildings or outside environments.
Contents of Research
Multiple redundant robots which are constituted by many autonomous mobile robots provide more reliable solutions to real-world tasks than a single agent because the overall system is less sensitive to failure. Reliability, however, is not the only benefit multi-robot systems offer; multi-robot teams can provide significant performance advantages as well. In order to realize increased performance however, the system designer must address a number of new challenges presented by the multi-robot domain.
The concept of modularity also play an important rule in the design of the robot team. Here the modules are the individual robot functions and the design task addresses the problem of determining how many robots to use and what kind of capabilities to select on different robots such that overall team is capable of completing task. Multi redundant robots research address these design issues and illustrates them with the specific example of the multi-robot team.
Effectiveness of Research
These researches can be applied to guarantee accessibility through not only exterior/interior environment such as automation factory, battle field, atomic power plant, and dangerous situation but also narrow passageways as air ducts, the robots have to be variety sizes from very small modular robot as approximately 10x10x10cm to supervisor robot as automotive guided vehicle used in factory. Especially, this small size puts severe weight and power limitations on the design of the robots. To overcome these limitations, we are going to develop a modular system in which modules with different sensing, computation, and communication capabilities can be combined into a complete robot that is specifically designed for a given task.
