Silkworm pupae have been used as foods in Korea to provide nutritional benefits. The consumption of silkworm pupae has long history. It is therefore important to assess the nutritive value and potential use of silkworm pupae as functional food supplements. Nuegra has been developed by RDA In 2001. N
Silkworm pupae have been used as foods in Korea to provide nutritional benefits. The consumption of silkworm pupae has long history. It is therefore important to assess the nutritive value and potential use of silkworm pupae as functional food supplements. Nuegra has been developed by RDA In 2001. Nuegra been interested by many consumers and sericulture farming is also an important materials of income. However, material of Nuegra is lacking demand than the supply. Because of this, the domestic market, cheap foreign raw materials is threatening. For the protection of domestic sericulture farmers need a differentiated strategy. Korea Food and Drug Administration to protect the domestic agricultural products in 2004 enacted the Health Functional Food Act. The general food of silkworms pupae in this country now recognized as healthy food in order to upgrade to next level research projects in the RDA is working with. Among them the most basic analysis of the silkworm male pupae is the result of a general characters. First, the analysis of 5 kinds nutrients, Calories 539.12 (Kcal/100mg), Carbohydrate 4.54 (%), Crude protein 54.01(%) Crude lipid 33.88(%) and Sodium 16.84(mg/100g) appeared. And the indicator of the safety, E. coli appeared as the negative, and four heavy metals Lead, Arsenic, Cadmium, Total mercury has passed the criteria as a trace. The BHC, DDT, Aldrin, Dieldrin and Endrin wasn' t detected the analysis of pesticide residue. which all have passed the criteria. Upon completion of all testing including clinical tests, application document of health functional food for certification will be submitted to the KFDA within this year. The silkworm is very difference in physiological chemical change according to growth stage. Therefor the functional effect shows a very big difference according to preparation method with a grows stage. This research carry out the experiment with the pupa powder immediately before the eclosion, eclosion adult, the pupa extract immediately before the eclosion, and the silkworm powder of 5 instar 3rd day. The result showed not a big change in weight, feed and water intake quantity. But testosterone hormone secretion effects of the freeze drying powder of the pupa immediately before the eclosion was very high 7.31ng/ml, compared to 2.37ng/ml of non treatment and 2.67ng/ml of alcohol extraction method. As this result, the freeze drying pupa powder of the pupa immediately before the eclosion was confirmed to promote the secretion of the testosterone hormone more than alcohol extraction method of existing.
The estrogen hormone secretion effects of the freeze drying powder of the Yeonnokjam male pupa immediately before the eclosion was very high 73pg/ml, compared with 59pg/ml of non treatment. The next is Yangwonjam male adult with 71pg/ml. The result of this experiment has been submitted for Korean patent.
The silkworm pupae were extracted with various solvents for the component analysis. The solvents were methanol, 80% ethanol, ethyl acetate and distilled water. The extraction proceeded for 6 hours at 25℃ and the boiling temperatures of solvents. From the experimental results the yield of extraction showed no independence of temperature and one of the most effective extraction solvent was 80% ethanol solution. From the analysis of results with GC/MS the extracted components were as follows; linolenyl alcohol 11.2∼16.8%, palmitic acid 6.4∼9.6%, oleic acid 5.6∼8.4%, linolic acid 3.2∼4.8% and stearic acid 1.6∼2.4%. And the undefined components less than 1% were detected. It appeared that the unseparated extracts showed the spoilage-possibilities as it kept in a refrigerator for a long duration.
This study was aimed to investigate the effects of silkworm powder on the nitric oxide synthase activity, nitrite level, lipid peroxidation, glutachione and erectile responses in rat' s corpus cavernosum penis and libido activity. Fifty Sprague Dawley male rats (7 weeks old) were used in this study. We induced the erectile dysfunction of the studied animals by 20% ethanol oral administration during 8 weeks. Silkworm powder treatment groups were divided 3 groups and the animals were oral-administered 200, 400 and 800 mg per 1 kg of body weight respectively for the studied period.
As the results, the level of urethral nitric oxide synthase activity and nitrite level in the silkworm powder administered rats were increased significantly. The level of urethral lipid peroxidation in the silkworm powder administered rats was increased significantly. The level of urethral glutachione in the silkworm powder administered rats was as high as in the normal group, while the one in the ethanol-treated negative control group was decreased. The erectile responses of the corpus cavernosum were restored by the silkworm powder to the similar level seen in the normal group. The level of libido activity in the silkworm powder administered rats was higher than those of the ethanol-treated negative control group. These results indicated that silkworm powder was effective in restoring the ethanol-induced erectile dysfunction in rats
We carried out a 12-week, randomized, d ouble-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in order to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Silkworm powder on male sexual dysfunction. Fifty subjects were randomly assigned to two treatment groups: Silkworm powder group and placebo group. Four of them dropped out of the study and 46 subjects accomplished the study (i.e., 24 subjects of the Silkworm powder group, 22 of the placebo group). Outcomes included measures of efficacy [e.g., the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF)-5 domains, hormones (testosterone and prolactin), and International prostate symptom score (IPSS)] and safety (e.g., adverse events, laboratory test, anthropometric data, vital sign, and prostate specific antigen). Subjects were followed up every 4 weeks for 12 weeks and they completed IIEF questionnaire at every visit. After 12 weeks of treatment, IIEF-5 domain score, hormones and IPSS of the Silkworm powder group did not significantly improved compared to those of the placebo group. However, we have observed tendencies of improvement of intercourse satisfaction (IIEF-IS), orgasm function (IIEF-OF), sexual desire (IIEF-SD), and Quality of life index score of IPSS in the Silkworm powder group. Specifically, IIEF-IS, OF and SD domain of the Silkworm powder group significantly improved in males with moderate or severe sexual dysfunction and males under 60 years of age , compared to those of the placebo group. This study suggests that Silkworm powder supplementation is considered to be safe and beneficial for improving sexual dysfunction in males.
