■ ACM GUI 구축
■ BrPS(Bio-retention Parking System)
■ TEST BED
◦ KICT 자체 개발한 CAT(Catchment Hydrologic Assessment Tool) 모델을 활용하여 정량화를 위한 분석을 수행

2. Developing Urban Micrometeorology Evaluating Model
■ Summary of Developing a Urban Micrometeorology Evaluating Model
◦ This study seeks to develop a basic element model that constitutes an ACM model which is based on the basic research of the development of an urban micrometeorology estimating model(AIR-CITY MODEL, ACM) that can estimate the urban micrometeorology change caused by the construction of an eco-friendly complex in block units.
◦ Phase 3 study was conducted, 2009-2011.
◦ Input variables are the control variables entered by the user model and Environmental factors, modeling of the target area. The final result is the modeling of the target area temperature and wind (wind speed, wind direction).
◦ The ACM model that we aim to develop is consisted of the following 4 functions.
- Function 1 : A distribution model of surface radiant energy that is equipped with D/B form of the cover material's heat characteristics that the KICT holds. (KSM)[Step 1]
- Function 2 : An urban climate model that can break down and copy in real time the micrometeorology phenomenon up to block units. (BMM)[Step 2]
- Function 3 : A heat diffusion model that can break down and copy in real time the heat diffusion phenomenon up to block units. (BHDM) [Step 2]
- Function 4 : An user GUI program that can control each of the functions mentioned above and show the results of each model elements. A domestic urban material D/B for the convenience of the users. [Step 3]
◦ ACM model considers a number of factors affecting the urban microclimate, such as distribution of the surrounding buildings, water, distribution of green space, broadly terrain conditions. Then configured so that it can quantify the changes in microclimate factors (air temperature, wind speed) by depending on the land cover conditions.
■ The Urban Micrometeorology
◦ The Magnitude and Effect of Urban Micrometeorology Change caused by Urban Development is unforeseeable.
- Urban climate is a local climate that changes by the interaction of the building region(including the release of waster heat and air pollutants) and regional climate.
- The reason that the temperature of urban area is higher comes from various factors such as the low radiant heat loss below the canopies in urban areas
- Urban climate may also change according to change of water balance, radiation, energy balance and wind.
◦ Due to relative decrease of green space, Micrometeorology Change occurred compared to surrounding areas that have not been developed.
- One of the crucial elements in the urban micrometeorology is the characteristic of soil and surface.
- With the continuous change of these characteristics, overheating and local wind circulation of urban areas occur.
- Green space in urban areas create a colder cool island than other urban areas.
■ Design Elements that Affect Urban Microclimate
◦ Urban design elements that affect the urban climate, comfort conditions and energy use
- The size and density of the built-up area
- Relationship with the placement and width of the street, the direction of the street and main wind
- Detail block of type and shape of the building site, size, and orientation
- Building height, shape, and relative position
- The shade conditions of the streets and surrounding parking
- Walk for road construction
■ ACM System Development

3. Eco-Point Development and Applications
■ Propose of an alternative plan for the 3D Eco-Point(Biotope Area Ratio) and its application plan.
◦ For "the development of evaluation indicators for ecological Integrity" in conjunction with the 2nd and 3rd year researches, planning for securing the ecological integrity of the development site, and estimation techniques of the Biotope Area Ratio as its evaluation tools have been useful.
◦ Review on whether the diagnostic level in utilizing the Biotope Area Ratio appropriately reflects the status of domestic construction and the substantial user's point of view is performed.
◦ After the construction of the planned co-housing using the estimation technique of the Biotope Area Ratio as one of indicators for the prior planning, the degree of satisfaction on the external space is evaluated through the interviews with residents residing in the completed field, and based on it, the improvement plan for the indicators of ecological integrity is considered.
■ Analysis of results on the opinion survey of residents
◦ In the opinion survey, awareness of the Biotope area ratio still stays on a fairly low level, and only 5% of the total surveyed is aware of the performance rating of the co-housing which they reside.
◦ Awareness of the performance rating of the co-housing and the Biotope area ratio presented in a sale guidebook, as in the involved international systems, rather than displayed in a building register, is considered to be low given the circumstances.
◦ This makes the effectiveness of the system under the conventional way even suspicious, and a need for improvement is impending in current situation.
◦ The survey results clearly show that the level of Biotope area ratio also does not match the degree of satisfaction on the overall fields of landscape architecture, and in the resident side, both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of greenery as factors affecting the ecological environment are prioritized.
◦ In the existing Biotope area ratio, the evaluation is limited to the performance of water permeability of the coated surface and the substantially unseen ecological functions at the bottom of surface, which results in a limitation in being linked with the satisfaction of the general public, and the results should be reflected in improving the estimation technique of ecological Integrity.
4. Development of a guideline on the counterplan for urban heat island
■ Development Background
◦ Destruction of greenery due to urbanization and uncontrolled development, and increase in precipitation caused by the reduction of wind speed and air pollution continues to cause the heat island phenomenon.
◦ In Tokyo, Japan, a thermal environment map was created, and based on it, a counterplan manual appropriate to the promoting area of the counterplan for urban heat island was published as a architectural guideline on the counterplan for urban heat island.
◦ As bases for applying the construction technology for heat island mitigation (suppression of heat island influence and stress relief due to temperature), creation of a thermal environment map and evaluation techniques for the reduction effects of anthropogenic heat through the application of counterplan technology are tasks to systematically promote along with the development of a architectural guideline on the counterplan for urban heat island
■ Progress status of the Heat island counterplan
◦ United States: Autonomous operation for the urban heat island mitigation
- As practical techniques for mitigating the urban heat island, Cool roofs, lighten streets, and Green Community are regarded to be important.
- Six policy directions including voluntary application of public buildings, revision of building codes for the roof surface improvement, setting of Heat island-resistant design standards, realization of Incentive System for the heat island mitigation, and pilot project, are presented.
◦ Germany: by the federal building code, creating a ‘urban construction management plan’ is explicitly stated at the time of urban planning.
- the importance of architecture and urban planning considering the climate is emphasized.
◦ Japan: the importance of urban green space is reflected in the policy, such as the statement of green zoning in the urban planning
- In Tokyo, to establish an counterplan for the heat island phenomenon considering regional thermal environment when constructing or extending building, a ‘heat island phenomenon counterplan guideline’ including a thermal environment map, a regional attribute-specific plan, and a building usage-specific plan is released.
◦ Domestic : generic technologies designed to mitigate the urban heat island phenomenon and suppress the influences are in incomplete status.
- Seoul Development Institute ‘A study on the urban planning techniques II considering meteorological characteristics (2001)’
- Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements ‘A study on the urban Construction strategy for disaster integration response safe to climate change (2009)’
■ Model of the design guideline for dealing with heat islands
◦ Creation of a climate map
- When the wide-area municipalities (cities and provinces) create a climate map over the regions where the heat island phenomenon has occurred significantly, the spatial scope to measure and measurement contents are explicitly stated.
◦ Classification of region types and mitigation goals
- At the same time of typifying temperature control counterplan regions based on the weather map the wide-area municipalities have created, the establishment of detailed heat island mitigation goals for each specific region (heat wave/heavy rain/drought regions or unit area per 500 × 500m) is explicitly stated through a survey of local residents. ◦ Setting of temperature control counterplan regions by region type
- In order to effectively execute the counterplan adapting to climate change ,regions and range sensitive to the consequences of climate change are specified.
- These regions are exposed to special problems of social, economic and natural conditions due to climate change.
- From this perspective, the side effects of the heat island phenomenon (heat wave/heavy rain/drought) currently occur in certain regions of the S-wide area municipalities, the regions are set as the temperature control counterplan regions and corresponding mitigation goals are specified.
◦ Choice of counterplan menu by regional characteristics
- The counterplan menu according to regional characteristics consists of the counterplans that can be chosen from three different directions, such as responses by climatic phenomenon to achieve the goal of heat island mitigation in the regions where a heat island counterplan is necessary, a comprehensive counterplan including natural and artificial responses, and responses in the urban and architectural spatial ranges.
◦ Creation of a design guideline by usage
- The design guideline by Usage is a design guideline created by applying a counterplan menu adapting to the goals for recovering or mitigating the heat island characteristics of the region type after typifying the heat island counterplan (temperature control counterplan) using the climate map municipalities have create in unit of 500 × 500m grid.
- Designers can perform a basic design according to the design guidelines that correspond to appropriate households by identifying the characteristics of climate for the regions(scale in unit of grid) that are assigned to them.
B. Eco SystemDevelopment of Artificial Ground
1. The technical condition of Artificial Ground
◦ An artificial ground is ‘a ground formed of artificial civil engineering and architectural structure that is located not only at the rooftop of a building but also at a building’s veranda, terrace and the outer space of a civil engineering structure that is separated from a natural ground’.
◦ An artificial ground located at the upper side of a basement parking lot and the structure of basement parking lot can be used as a green space and resting space that can improve the quality of human life.
◦ Classification of an artificial ground constructed at a housing complex and a business district
- According to the layout plan of the basement parking lot 1)Separated type 2)Mixed type
- According to whether the block type is separated or not 1)Block combined type 2)Block separated type 3)Mixed type
2. Prototype Development of Bio-retention Parking System
■ Development direction and goals
◦ By controlling runoff, urban flooding, urban heat islands, and urban climate change phenomenon are relieved.
◦ By inherently blocking the initial runoff with a high contaminant concentration and utilizing the soil layer under artificial soil as a water purification layer, saving of the processing cost required in the production of heavy water is attained.
■ Composition & Expected Impacts of BrPS(Bio-retention Parking System)
◦ Integration between the existing on ground parking lot method and bio-retention swale method
◦ Integration of water purification and rainwater storing by utilizing the existing artificial and soil ground
◦ Rainwater coming from the on ground parking lot and grounds surrounding the on ground parking lot pass through the BrPS then pass through a series of procedures such as evaporation, precipitation, filtering and purification. Such processed water gets induced back to the BrPS to be used for cleaning, filling the water pipes, cooling, etc. This is an example of a complete water circulation system.
◦ Discharge of initial rainfall will be from the road, parking lot floor, car stopper sewerage, grit tank, osmosis green (green crater) in order then the rainwater gets either absorbed by the soil layer or gets evaporated
◦ During the heavy rain, the rainwater will travel from road to the floor of the parking lot then the overflow of rainwater from the sewerage will be directly induced to the osmosis sector. Rainwater induced to the osmosis sector will be induced to the soil layer, sewerage layer then sewerage pipes to be stalled at the receiving tank. Overflow from the osmosis sector will be induced from the overflow tank to the sewerage, sewerage pipes then to the receiving tanks.
◦ Benefits
- BrPS application on the artificial ground (Floor of the underground parking lot) allows rainwater collection facility to be installed while minimizing the maintenance costs.
- Controlling discharge level 20% or below
- Controlling initial discharge of storm sewerage at 0% for controlling the source of water pollution
- Reducing radiant heat generated from the parked cars while maintaining the cool atmosphere through evaporation cooling effects
- Minimizing industrial wastes by utilizing renewable steel beams and use of binders made from pure inorganic minerals
- Water quality purification done on the soil layer of the artificial ground reduces costs involved in processing heavy water
■ Plan for applying system in the field.
◦ As a example of the existing co-housing plans, based on the implementation design drawings of co-housing complex currently under construction, creation of design plan for the system application is proceeded.
◦ By identifying problems that can occur in this process and providing feedback on the practical plan to facilitate the design reflects, the trials and errors of construction and design are minimized.
◦ Problems in the application
- As most of the existing parking spaces was designed without buffering greenery, penetrable greenery area besides parking area is needed in order to introduce BrPS, resulting in a decrease of the number of parking lot
- In general, as the structure of base layer varies depending on the type of pavement of parking surface, troublesome problems consistent with the structure of the base layer of penetrable greenery are expected to occur.
◦ Plan for system complement
- Prior to the commercialization of system, field verification through a pilot construction in the actual apartment space is needed.
- Simultaneous monitoring of the performance of runoff reduction is carried out.
■ Development of TEST BED
◦ Target region: a two-lane road passing through the right-hand side of the main building of the Korea Institute of Construction Technology
◦ System
- Three parking spaces are enclosed in one unit to secure greenery area.
- The area where Vehicle entry is restricted due to the stop jaw of the existing parking spaces is incorporated into greenery area to secure the maximum greenery.
- The runoff that occurs in the parking space is collected to the center part using gradient, and designed to penetrate to the bottom of greenery after passing through grit chambers first.
■ Quantification of the scale estimation of ecotype-parking spaces
◦ Utilizing the KICT own-developed CAT(Catchment Hydrologic Assessment Tool) model, an analysis for quantification is performed.
◦ As a criterion for measuring of hydrological performance and estimating the scale for various ecological greening technologies other than BrPS, a utilization plan is presented.
- Target basin area: 553㎡ (Bio-Retention Facility Area: 115 ㎡)
- Outflow of approximately 35% occurred compared to the runoff volume(642.6㎥) prior to the installation of penetration facility
- From the simulation results of rainfall, outflow of approximately 57% occurred
■ Modeling system of planning elements for ecological artificial soil
◦ 2·3 dimensional modeling techniques of the planning elements of outdoor space for ecological artificial soil are developed, and basic functions for the planning element modeling of parking spaces of eco-retained type are developed.
- It mainly consists of a main toolbar, a menu toolbar, drawing and visualization modes (Sketch, Space, 3D), a component window.
- At the center of the screen, a x, y, z coordinate system and a scale bar to gauge actual accumulation are placed, and a snap and grid setting menu, current location coordinates, and units are displayed at the bottom.
3. Prototype Development of Rooftop Greening Eco System
■ Development direction and goals
◦ A method that is based on a ‘Roof greening system replacing a outside heat-insulation wall method’ and a ‘Inverted roof greening system’
◦ Shortening the construction period of root-resistant layer by adding blocked out the water and root-resistand function to a drainage layer improves economic efficiency, waterproofing and insulation layers are protected from external shocks, and waterproofing is improved by forming a double-structured waterproofing layer.
◦ By filling soil in the Eco-mat woven with natural fabrics, the flow range of soil is limited to the inside of the eco-mat, and soil loss and soil settlement that occur during spread soil, are prevented
■ System Characteristics
◦ Single integrated rooftop greening as a building envelope provides a higher durability to structural parts and waterproofing layers, and adopts a outside heat-insulation wall method as a basic method, particularly in order to enhance thermal performance
◦ By developing a outside insulation green roof system utilizing multi-functional drain boards and Eco-Mat, the drawbacks of the existing greening system are complemented.
◦ By integrating the functions of root-resistant layer and drainage layer in the existing greening system, construction period and manpower needs are reduced and saving of construction cost is attained.
◦ A outside insulation rooftop greening system using a multi-functional (waterproof, root-resistance, drainage, water storage) board consists of a structure> primary waterproof> a multi-functional board (insulation, secondary waterproof, root-resistance, water storage, drainage, complex functions)> a soil filter> a soil layer> a planting layer.
4. Prototype development of water-retention rooftop
◦ A rooftop greening system has a limitation in temporary retention of rainfall and runoff reduction in a guerrilla heavy rain that occurs frequently in the city.
◦ A rooftop drain hole cap that has the sufficient effect of retention and runoff reduction in a guerrilla heavy rain is provided, and accordingly temporary rooftop retention is intended.
◦ A prototype is covered on the outer rooftop drain hole and installed in both the outer drain hole cap and the inside of outer drain hole cap designed for drainage to enable drainage by recovering the rooftop drain hole and including a inner drain hole cap that is designed for the drainage capacity at least in the lateral lower side to be small relative to the lateral upper side or the upper surface.
5. Results of long-term experiments for evaluating performance of greening root-resistant materials
■ Experiment Overview
◦ An experiment for the root-resistance performance was performed over 2 years (2008. 6. 11~2010. 6. 21) on a total of 14 kinds of typical root-resistant materials currently being applied in the rooftop greening System
◦ Performance of root-resistant materials was practically validated under domestic climate and planting conditions.
■ Experimental results
◦ A root penetration was found at the junction between the material in cases of 10 types of material used in the root-resistance methods in which a root penetration was found, and found in the composition material itself for another method. For the cases of painted covers-damaged products, a root penetration was not found at the lower part of the material but a damaged state was observed at the painted covers of upper urethane series.
◦ In FRP material series, root-resistance performance appeared to be excellent, just as domestic and international results
C. Development of Low Carbon Eco Complex

■ Background of the research
◦ Ecological and social issues have been raised following uniformity in domestic housing types.
◦ Townhouse which was proposed as an alternative method has problems such as reduction in land utilization ratio following low density development, lack of urban infrastructures and increase in construction cost of a housing unit.
◦ As an alternative method, the concept of Compact City which emphasizes the importance of high concentration of low story buildings has to be introduced.
◦ Objective : To design a model that minimize the effect of urban climate where meeting the needs of future housing demand
■ Applicable unit residential types
◦ Generally the residential type has close relation to density, grounding, number of entrances, parking lot plans, etc
◦ Residential type is categorized by the density. Therefore, concerning laws and regulations has to be reevaluated.
◦ Privacy issues raised by the density, grounding and complex residential centered development are closely related to the demand made by the market on the residential housing types. The following table shows difference in the density, grounding and parking lot plans per residential building types. The table shows the range of development density per domestic complex lot type
■ Directions in constructing residential complex
◦ As a countermeasure for the high densityㆍgigantic metropolitan city development, the research was able to confirm the necessity of developing high densityㆍlow story building by evaluating the compact city case and residential demands of the domestic market.
◦ Domestic laws and regulations should allow 100-200% of floor area ratio and should allow diversified types of residential buildings demanded by the market to be constructed.
