The ocean covers 70% of the Earth surface and provides a medium on the global climate in various aspects. Solar radiation heats up the ocean, in particular at the low latitude, transferring the energy to the high latitude where solar heating is limited. Wind driven ocean current transports the heat energy longitudinal as well as latitudinal direction. In addition, heat and moment fluxes across the air-water interface in the ocean provides a conduit for breathing the ocean, inhaling or exhaling gases from or to the atmosphere.
This project, named as SHIPPO (SHIp-borne Pole-to-Pole Observations), focuses on the chemical processes taking place in the marine boundary layer (MBL) that impact on the global climate. The MBL is directly linked by the surface mixed layer (SML) which provides habitat for the organisms living there, in particular phytoplankton which assimilate solar energy to fix inorganic material to the energy source of higher level of organisms. Active biological production in the SML stimulates the ecological system and chemical derivations including transformation of trace gases. These gases leave for or are absorbed from the atmosphere due to difference in the concentration across the interface. One of the best examples is CO2 exchange between them. The ocean is an important sink for the atmospheric CO2, although some places act as source. However, many biogenic gases such as N2O, CH4, CO, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted to the atmosphere. Most of these biogenic trace gases are short-lived and are involved in the photo-chemistry occurring in the MBL, changing the radiation budget. One of the objectives of SHIPPO is to identify processes in the atmosphere which can utterly affects the climate change. Atmospheric oxidation in the marine boundary layer alters the chemical form emitted from the ocean. A good example is dimethyl sulfide (DMS) which is produced in the SML by phytoplankton cleavage, emitted to the MBL through the air-sea interface, and oxidized to sulfate ion by a chain reactions with oxidant, hydroxyl radical, ending up with becoming an ingredient of aerosol. The atmospheric oxidation in the MBL differs from that in the continent because of low VOCs and NOx which are important chemical compounds to determine ozone (O3), the precursor of hydroxyl radical. Unique and unknown atmospheric chemistry can be expected in the MBL, which waitsfor our painstaking endeavor supported by Araon’s steaming around the ocean between the polar oceans.
The spatial distribution of trace gases that are related to the climate directly or indirectly via photochemistry in the MBL were investigated in this project. Included are CO2, CH4, N2O, CO, H2, O3, NOx, PAN, gaseous elemental Hg(GEM), reactive gaseous Hg (RGM), particle bounded Hg (PBM). Along the cruise track, we encountered several air masses coming from South Asia, East Siberia, the North Pacific, and the Arctic Ocean as she straddled between the two large air systems, East Asian Low and North Pacific High. In addition, west-east stark contrast of air quality along the track, most trace gas concentration shows a similar spatial trend from Korean peninsular to Alaska. We also measured trace gases dissolved in the mixed layer, which allows us to determine their fluxes across the air-sea interface. Most of the surface waters were under-saturated with respect to the atmospheric CO2 above, in particular the continental shelf zone of the Bering Sea appear to be the strongest. Anomalously high CH4 was observed south of the Hokkaido right after passing the Tsugaru Strait. N2O was supersaturated everywhere, particularly strongest to the East of the Kuril archipelago. CO showed typical diurnal pattern, although the degree of saturation was not so high as expected that in the open ocean, likely due to overcast during the campaign.
In addtion to the gaseous species, we measured aerosol composition along the cruise track using a aerosol mass spectrometer to understand the source configuration in high resolution. In the vicinity of the Korean peninsular large content of SO4 was detected until passing the tsugaru strait where biomass signature was crossed. Afterwards, the air masses that were encounterred in the North Pacific and Bering Sea contained lower concentration of SO4, but significant amoutn of organics.
