Miscanthus is one of the promising energy crops for producing bioethanol or bioenergy in many countries. A field of about 180 ha for M iscanthus plantation was started for demonstration near Geum River in 2011. Since the size of the field is much larger than those of traditional cultivation for one single crop in this country, questions were raised if there are any environmental impacts from the energy crop plantation, particularly on water quality. In this study, water quality of runoff water from three different plots was analyzed for assessing the impacts of energy crop production. The results showed that there were no substantial differences among the plots; control, the first, and the second year growth fields. The concentrations of COD, T-N, and T-P were lower than those in runoff water from agricultural crop fields. The second year field showed a slight higher values of COD and T-N concentrations due to the biodegradation of residue of M iscanthus which was not cultivated for observation. Commercial planation of M iscanthus in a large scale would not result in a water quality problem when avoiding application of fertilizer as practiced in agricultural crop fields.
We also investigated the influence of the giant M iscanthus on the soil properties. The particle size, CEC, pH, EC, T-N, T-P, heavy metal total concentration, and heavy metal fractions of soil samples collected from abandoned field, 1 year old giant M iscanthus field, and 2 year old giant M iscanthus field at different depths of 0∼15, 15∼30, and 30∼45 cm in April and August were analyzed. Results showed that the CEC and pH of the soil of the giant M iscanthus field were lower than those of the soil of abandoned field. The EC of 2 year old giant M iscanthus field was lower than that of abandoned field, indicating that the giant M iscanthus may facilitate soil desalination process. The organic and sulfide fraction and residual fraction of heavy metals in the giant M iscanthus field was higher than in abandoned field, due to the low pH of the giant M iscanthus field and the excretion of phytosiderophores by rhizome of the giant M iscanthus.
To evaluate the ecological influence of the giant M iscanthus as an bioenergy crop for the future, we investigated the impact of the construction of the giant M iscanthus production fields on the biota and also compared it with biota in paddy fields near the study sites.
The biota including plants, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, avifauna, insects, and bugs was investigated. The plant diversity of the giant M iscanthus production fields was poorer than the paddy fields because the high height of the giant M iscanthus might hinder the growth of other plants. However, the giant M iscanthus production fields serves habitat to animals, leading to rich diversity of animals including avifauna, insects, and bugs. The rich diversity of the animals in the giant M iscanthus production fields coincides with the fact that the giant M iscanthus was grown without any pesticide, herbicide, and fertilizer.
To assess the economics feasibility of M iscanthus, the productivity and the cost of Miscanthus are identified as major variables. For the productivity, MISCANMOD, developed by Clifton-Brown (2004), is modified into STELLA. Local temperature and PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) data in Korea are used. Water module (rainfall and evaporation) is modified. The simulation result shows that the productivity of M iscanthus in Korea is expected to be between 4.89∼42.47 ton/ha, depending on environment. The simulated average is 25.8 ton/ha with probability of 0.68. For the cost, preparation of the land, planting and harvest cost are considered. The propriety of cost of rhizome is found to loom large. For the benefit, the direct net benefit at farm level and the net benefit at social level (the direct net benefit + benefits from landscpae conservation, substitution of petroleum, reduction of carbon emission) are considered. A status quo analysis indicates that the economic feasibility of M iscanthus is not secured. Partial sensitivity analyses, varying one variable only, indicate that the economic feasibility can be secured when the petroleum price increases to 2.49 $/ℓ. Total sensitivity analyses, varying three variables simultaneously, indicate that the positive(+) direct net benefit can not be secured. The social net benefits are simulated to be positive for scenario Ⅳ(the productivity: 25.8 ton/ha, petroleum price: 2.49 $/ℓ, rhizome price: 10% drops), Ⅴ(the productivity: 25.8 ton/ha, petroleum price: 2.49 $/ℓ, rhizome price: 0), Ⅵ(the productivity: 42.47 ton/ha, petroleum price: 0.49 $/ℓ, rhizome price: 10% drops), Ⅶ(the productivity: 42.47 ton/ha, petroleum price: 0.49 $/ℓ, rhizome price: 0), Ⅷ(the productivity: 42.47 ton/ha, petroleum price: 2.49 $/ℓ, rhizome price: 10% drops) and Ⅸ(the productivity: 42.47 ton/ha, petroleum price: 2.49 $/ℓ, rhizome price: 0).
