It is well documented now that diet plays an important role in health and disease. Improving dietary patterns, and, in trun, improving nutritional status, is viewed as a key to improve public health and to prevent chronic diseases. There has been a great deal of work done to link between diet and chronic disease, however, most researches focused on measurement of single dietary component or of related nutrients as indicators of diet quality. Little research has been done on methods to assess overall diet quality related to chronic disease or public health promotion. The purpose of this study was to construct an index to measure the overall complexity and quality of diet that can be used to monitor nutritional status and to serve as a useful tool for nutrition screening and health promotion. Health Eating Index (HEI) was developed based on a 10-component system of 5nutrient-related components based on Dietary Guidelines for Korean (1989, Korean Nutirtion Society) and 5 food group-related components based on Food Guide Tower (1995, Korean Nutrition Society). Each of the component has a score of 1, 3, 5, and the total possible index score is 50. A survey was conducted to analyze and to validate the HEI. The subjects were 432 healthy males and females in their 30's and 40's, and 24hr-recall and food frequency questionnaire were conducted. The mean HEI score was 32.34 when assessed with 24-hr recall method and 33.43 with FFQ. Based on the HEI, Mini Dietary Assessment Index (MDA) was developed to evaluate usual dietary behaviors. It is composed of 10 dietary elements. Asubject is to check one of 'alway' 'generally' 'seldom', which has score of 5, 3, and 1, respectively. MDA contained 4 food elements of which use is encouraged, such as milk, meat, vegetables, fruits, and 3 food elements of which use is limited, such as fat, salt, or sugar. Also the included were elements on dietary regulation and variety. This index is to use without dietary survey and is to use even by non-nutritionist. The mean MDA score in this study was 31.34 of possible 50 points. To validate, MDA score was compared with 24-hr recall data. The main nutrients for each elements was correlated very well with the results of dietary survey. Also, very good correlation was found between HEI score and MDA score. We concluded that the HEI is a useful index of overall diet quality of middle-aged Korean. Also, the MDA could be used with minor modification to assess dietary behavior and to screen nutritional status.
