Agriculture using seawater or natural salts for environment-friendly agricultural products is recently increasing, but it was caused the salt accumulation of soil and impact on crops by excessive use of seawater and natural salts. To evaluate salt accumulation and effects on crops by seawater or natural salts, this study was conducted at the organic cultivation fields which garlics were planted at the autumn of before year. The treatments were as follows; 1) water of 3,865 L ha-1 (control), plots applied 1 time, 2 times and 3 times with seawater of 3,865 L ha-1) no natural salts (control), plots applied 100 ~ 600 kg ha-1 with natural salts. Soil samples were taken from the 0- to 25-cm depth at 10 days and 69 days (harvest time) after treatments in seawater plots, at 12 days and 92 day (harvest time) after treatments in natural salts, respectively. The results showed that the concentration of Electrical Conductivity (EC), Exchangeable Na (Ex. Na) and Cl were increased by application of seawater and natural salts. But, pH and exchangeable cations (K, Ca and Mg) had not significantly differences among treatments. In 3 times plots of seawater, the level of EC, Ex. Na and Cl-- were increased more 1.1, 2.1, and 3.3 times than Control. In 600 kg ha-1 plots of natural salts, the level of EC, Ex. Na and Cl-- was were increased more 2.1, 4.5, and 13 times than Control. EC, Ex. Na, and Cl-- were higher in the top 5 cm of soil and decreased with depth at 10~12 days after seawater and natural salts, but were decreased by of in the plower layer(0~15 cm) at the harvest time because they were leached by natural rain. To The uptake of inorganic elements such as Total Nitrogen (T-N), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), and Zinc (Zn) of garlics were decreased but that of Chloride (Cl) increased adversely.
For scientific verification if traditional seawater agricultural techniques are effective for crop pest management, we investigated control efficacy of diluted saline solution from seawater or bay salt against 5 plant pathogens and 5 insect pests on vegetable crops such as pepper, green onion and strawberry. As a result over 30 times of diluted saline water (NaCl >1%) decreased more 70% conidial production of Leveillula taurica on pepper, and injury level of Lyriomyza chinensis and Spodoptera exigua on green onion. Injury levels of strawberry by fungal pathogens, Botrytis cinerea and Spharotheca humuli were decreased with diluted saline water, and density growth rate of cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii , was decreased on cucumber treated with x10 diluted saline water (NaCl 0.3%). Especially, preventive control efficacy of bacterial wilt, Ralstonia solanacearum, with seawater (x1) treatment into soil during rainy season increased additively after winter-rye rotation. In addition, seawater (x1) spraying on green onion was safe to spiders and soil quality over 12 times of treatments in greenhouse. Thus, pest control techniques using seawater or bay salt solution are more safe than chemical pesticides and able to prevent crops against pathogens and insect pests inhabited on the surface of leaf or root tip. However, undiluted (NaCl 3.3%) or x10 diluted saline water resulted in salinity stress such as 'firing' of vegetable leaves and growth inhibition of green onion. Comprehensive consideration from this study, therefore, suggests a safety usage of seawater for organic crop pest management.
The disease control efficacy by seawater was investigated to the major crop diseases such as rice blast, bacterial leaf blight, berley fusarium head blight, powdery mildew, soybean pod and stem blight, bacterial pustule, and purple blotch. As a result, the disease control effect was not appeared any cases of the treatment time, the concentration, and the number of treatment. And the growth inhibition of the pathogen was not effectively in vitro test. On the contrary, any pathogen such as Fusarium graminaerum, Cercospora kikuchii , Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea, and Xanthomonas campestris pv. glyciens was promoted at the diluted seawater.
The results of an experiment to investigate the safety dilution endpoint of seawater, salt disorder occurs in more than 10-fold concentration of seawater to rice and soybean, and more than 20-fold concentration of seawater to berley. Rice and wheat yield loss due to the salt water treatment did not appear. But in case of soybean, more than twice treat with seawater showed a significant yield reduction.
