- Bacillus subtilis

Mastitis in dairy cattle cows occurs as the result of the combined actions of various factors, such as the genetic and physiological factors, the breeding management, and feeding environment of a livestock farm. More than 80 kinds of bacteria are known to be the pathogens of mastitis, which cause such problems as mammalian tissue damage and lactation dysfunction through various inflammatory factors. However, there is a limitation to treating them using a few kinds of antibiotics. Accordingly, this research analyzed the major pathogens of mastitis in dairy cattle and demonstrated the therapeutic effect of the injection of garlic extract, an antioxidant on mastitis. Based on the result of analysis, the incidence of subclinical mastitis among the entire milking cows was 31.4% (27 head/86 head); 37 kinds of bacteria, including Klebsiella oxytoca, were isolated from bulk-tank milk; 52 kinds of bacteria, including Streptococcus warneri, were isolated from quarter milk; and 15 kinds of bacteria, including Pantoea spp, were isolated from the quarter milk of the quarters with subclinical mastitis containing more than 500,000 somatic cells per milliliter. The effect of garlic extract injection into the quarters with subclinical mastitis on the reduction in the number of somatic cells was as follows: For the control group, with injection of physiological saline, 3 (50%) out of 6 heads showed a reduction in the number of somatic cells after a week. In contrast to the group with injection of 1.0% garlic extract, 5 (71.4%) out of 7 heads showed a reduction in the number of somatic cells. Further, for the group with injection of 1.0% garlic extract and antibiotic at the same time, 66.7% of the Holstein cows showed a reduction in the number of somatic cells. The reduction rate of the number of the somatic cells in the quarters with subclinical mastitis after garlic extract injection was shown to be 29.4% in the control group, 36.9% in the group with 0.1% garlic extract injection, 47.7% in the group with 1.0% garlic extract injection, and 86.4% in the group with injection of both 1.0% garlic extract and antibiotic. Thus, the injection of more garlic extract showed better result on the reduction rate of the number of the somatic cells in the quarters with subclinical mastitis. The result of this research confirmed that the injection of garlic extract into Holstein cows with mastitis was effective for the improvement and prevention of mastitis.
