Purpose & contents
The objectives of the research for this year are as follows.
1) mass production through separation and purification of constituent substances of load-bearing materials
2) Synthesis of biomimetic macromolecules of marine organisms and evaluation of their mechanical properties
3) Confirm the possibility of synthesized materials for bone-substitute
4) Measure mechanical properties by developing organic/inorganic hybrid material
Result
Marine environment has in much common with human body in that there are saline water, mechanical impact, the change in temperature, corrosion, and biological quality of various microorganism. Various marine organisms have evolved with suitable materials to survive and adapt to rough marine environment. So, these materials have suitable properties for designing bone substitute materials in human body which are under similar stress like marie environment. Especially, biomimicking subjects such as polychaete jaws, squid beak, which are composed of 100% organic can be used for load bearing materials that have similar mechanical property with human teeth. In this project, on the basis of our previous research to design a bone substitute, we will research on development of a new medical adhesive or filler from the organic load bearing material of marine invertebrates.
Specifically, we developed PETMP-SPC as a dental adhesive by conjugating SPC, which is a catechol-based derivative, to the PETMP. Developed materials showed similar or superior related ability than commercial products. In addition, chitin which forms the main exoskeleton of most crustacea was made into medical nanofiber and the GBR membrane based on chitin nanofiber is manufactured. The atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique is introduced to make the chitin/titanium hybrid membrane. The developed adhesive and the GBR membrane showed excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties. Especially, we obtained useful results for industrial expansion and application due to capability of mass production.
Expected Contribution
There are various kinds of materials that are widely used as a bone substitute using an alloy or a ceramic, which have high mechanical properties. However, due to the high density(~8g/mL) and relatively low biocompatibility, development of lightweight and innovative material for a bone substitute are required. Because squid beak and polychaete jaws mimicking organic and inorganic complex material has relatively low density, it consumes less energy (<2g/mL) and the mechanical property of this load bearing material is suitable for a bone substitute. The marine organisms have the highest suitability to biomaterials, in that they are rarely damaged from the rough marine environment with high wear and corrosion resistance in their whole life. Therefore, success in understanding marine organisms and development of biomimicking will lead to a great innovation in bone substitute field which was 4 trillion won scale and had more than 20% average growth in 2011 on the world market.
