The goal of this research is to develop a neural interface electrode capable of receiving and transmitting neural signals to realize a bionic arm that can be naturally controlled and feel. Previously existing neural interface electrodes have the trend of increasing invasiveness in increasing signal selectivity, have limitation due to the formation of scar tissue that makes acquiring signals difficult in the cases of chronic implantation. Therefore, this research intend to develop a novel neural interface electrode based on spiral shaped neural electrode array that has minimally invasive and highly selective characteristics with application of natural neural regeneration inducing methods and neural regeneration guide via neural growth factor loaded micro-channels.
Total three types of peripheral nerve interface electrode is researched; the high porosity sieve electrode, the spiral sieve electrode, and the neurotrophic electrode. Also two different animal model was used to evaluate the electrodes;rat model and rabbit model. The high porosity sieve electrode is an improvement over existing sieve electrodes by increasing the porosity to 50% and 70%, greatly aiding the natural regeneration capability of the peripheral nerve. The spiral sieve electrode is and array of 4 probes each with 8 electrodes per probe. The array is designed so that the probes can be spirally inserted around the peripheral nerve greatly reducing the damage to the nerve while maintaining the neural signal selectivity in comparison to existing neural electrodes such as Utah slanted electrode array. The electrodes on the probes are sieve hole types, and thus allows natural regeneration of the nerve axons through the probes. Finally, the neurotrophic electrode is designed to have microchannels within which the neural growth factor can be loaded, which induces nerve axons to regenerate into the channels and make secure contact with the electrodes within the channels. These peripheral nerve interface electrodes were designed, fabricated and evaluated via preclinical animal trials with rat and rabbit models.
The results of this research established the design and fabrication method of high porosity sieve electrode, the proposed spiral sieve neural electrode for the peripheral nerve, and the neurotrophic electrode with loaded neural growth factors. The regenerative capability of the sieve electrode and its biocompatibility up to 6 months has been confirmed via animal motor function recovery and the immunohistochemistry. Additionally, sympathetic nerve signal was acquired using the sieve electrode. The electrical characteristic of the spiral sieve neural electrode has been confirmed and its manual and device aided insertion method established. The neural signal was acquired through the spiral sieve electrode via rat and rabbit clinical trials. The neural growth factor loading method onto the cone shaped neurotrophic electrode has been established, and the neural signal was acquired periodically. The single probed micro-fabricable neurotrophic electrode was additionally designed and its fabrication feasibility confirmed and the process was optimized. Through these results, all of the goals of this research has been more than achieved.
This project aims to develop a wireless nerve signal processing system for implantable bidirectional multichannel nerve interface that enables both the recognition of motional intention and the delivery of sensory feedback.
The system consists of a nerve signal recording circuit, an electrical nerve stimulation circuit, a wireless communication circuit, a wireless power transfer circuit, as well as signal processing algorithms for nerve signal analysis and stimulation signal pattern generation.
In the first year of the project, the detailed design of the implantable wireless nerve signal processing system has been completed by defining the structure, operation and required performance of the system. The design of all the constituting circuits have also been completed, including the low-power low-noise nerve signal recording circuit, high-efficiency safety-guaranteed nerve stimulation circuit, low-power high-speed body-channel communication circuit, and high-efficiency wireless power transfer circuit. All the target operation features and performance targets have been successfully achieved. In addition, core techniques and technologies for the analysis of efferent motor activity as well as the synthesis of afferent sensory activity have been firmly established, meeting all the goals and targets set for the first year execution.
