1.1 Research background and necessity
The global healthcare system is under pressure because of population aging, limited health care resources (e.g., shortage of clinical personnel and budget), and increasing expectations from the patients. In older people, falls are an important problem, with yearly fall rates between 33% for those 65 years of age to 50% for those over 85 years old. 20~30% falls result in injuries or the need for medical attention, being the leading cause of death and non-fatal injury in older people.
Fall-related injuries are considered as “Global Burden of Disease” by WHO. Therefore, it is critical to prevent falls from happening.
There are strong evidences that appropriate fall intervention programs can reduce fall risk in older people. Some researchers reported that fall prevention interventions can reduce the risk of falling for the elderly by 40~50%. Although many fall risk assessment tools (from simple clinical tools to sophisticated expensive lab equipment to emerging wearable sensor systems) were developed and they can be used to identify potential fall risk factors in older people, there is a lack of objective, accurate but inexpensive and easy-to-administer fall risk assessment and diagnosis tools that can be undertaken regularly (such as at home settings) by the elderly. In addition, the follow-up tailored fall intervention programs targeted to the identified fall risk factors are the key for the success to regain balance and minimize risk of falling in future. Therefore, seamless integration of multifactorial fall risk assessment with tailored fall interventions is very crucial for minimizing the fall risks of the elderly.
