The summary of the research results according to major research content is as follows.
A. Future education and teaching and learning
As we face the era of the 4th industrial revolution, we are accelerating discussions on innovation in education to cultivate creative talents responding to a rapidly changing society. Student-centered education for the future society can be an education that guarantees students’ choices to the maximum and can actively and flexibly support various situations. In addition, it is believed that efficient and diverse learning environments and educational spaces are needed to adequately support this. In the case of a newly built school, an architectural plan should be made considering this future educational environment. It is necessary to make an effort to reorganize the existing spatial structure in order for encompassing future education by considering architectural structural limitations of existing schools and utilizing architectural planning elements that can be accommodated in the existing building.
B. Analyzing the direction of the future learning environment
In most of the studies, the future learning environment predicts the appearance of a diverse and flexible learning environment in order to cultivate creative talents in the future, out of the current uniform school and classroom.
If we look at the main directions for creating a future learning environment, it emphasizes the importance of school spaces to reinforce creativity, personality, and emotional education functions, and it is said that the diversification of teaching and learning activities should be induced by redesigning the learning space. For this, it is said that the learning space should be flexible educationally and physically, and the space should be multifunctional. For example, it is said that studios, small spaces, and seminar rooms with various functions should be secured, and these spaces should be secured for multipurpose functionality, not for specific purposes. The importance of warm, friendly and personalized spaces has been suggested to create an emotional atmosphere, too.
The creation of a smart school based on communication, cooperation, and experience, which is the problem given by the current Corona, can be one of the essential elements that the future learning environment must have.
From the above, the school space innovation can be defined as a concept including the following characteristics.
First, it must be able to accommodate changing education and various teaching and learning methods through school space innovation in the future.
Second, the existing uniform and formal teaching and learning spaces are composed of diverse, variable and flexible spaces for individualized education, which is centered on the individual capabilities of each studen. And it is a process of innovating the spatial structure which can link them organically.
Third, it gives meaning to the design process which the user actively participates in and places importance on the educational effect of the process itself.
Lastly, it creates a space where promotes users to conduct more active and live learning and life in the future that is different from the past.
C. Establishing the concept of educational effectiveness and the scope of research
This study aims to establish the effective direction of school space innovation through the development and analysis of research tools for educational effects and impacts such as the impact of teaching and learning and student activities of school space innovation, a space restructuring project for school facilities to cope with recent future education.
Recently, there have been few domestic preceding studies on the educational effect of school space. Particularly, there are no research cases related to educational effects focusing on spatial structure in relation to school space innovation for future education, but foreign countries such as the United States, Australia and OECD have been continuously promoted the research on the educational effect of space change and many in-depth researches are being conducted on the effect of space variability on student-centered education.
Foreign countries are often in the process of preparing for quantitative research on educational effects or impacts, and research is expected to be continued in the future.
This study intend to develop a research tool which can evaluate impacts and educational effects of school spatial structure which affect school education and students’ life. It is done through school spatial innovation project which is lively conducted domestically and in-depth analysis process on the change in space structure and education, Since the recent curriculum and future direction of education is changing from the Japanese-style teaching and learning method to a student-centered, individualized and diverse curriculum, it explores how much the change of space can support the flow of this curriculum, and how diverse is it in the actually changed spatial structure and whether there has been a change in the educational activities and life of teachers and students.
Through this we intend to provide direction whether the innovation of school space has an actual educational effect and in what direction space innovation is more desirable for educational effect. Additionally, it is intended to analyze the practical educational effects that can appear by looking at the changes in the student’s satisfaction and affective areas according to changes in the school educational environment through school space innovation.
The research tool will evaluate the school space innovation project before and after (after residence) for educational change, and through this a positive feedback on the space innovation project and policy will be possible.
D. Developing research tools
In this study, to analyze the educational effect of school space innovation, the flow of influence and effect is analyzed by dividing the factors into three stages such as input, process, and performance.
The input factor corresponding to the independent variable was set as spatial innovation, and the degree of innovative change in the unit space and the overall space of the school was analyzed, and the user participatory design process that can act as a short-term influencing factor was also included. School education, which corresponds to the process factor, was set to act as a dependent variable in the intermediate stage, and the factor was set to act as a parameter that affects the final dependent variable of performance. School culture, educational activities, and school These include life. Finally, educational outcome factors corresponding to outcomes were set as the final dependent variable, and related factors were set by categorizing them into social outcomes, emotional outcomes, motivational outcomes, and cognitive outcomes.
Factors for each stage can be classified into individual level, class level, school level, etc. The input variable spatial innovation sets the content corresponding to the class level and school level as factors, and the school education corresponding to the process variable is set as factors to individual level/class level/school level. Finally the factor was set by focusing on the individual level for educational outcomes.
With the establishment of such a conceptual model, this study aims to develop a survey tool that can investigate and analyze how the change of space through school space innovation affects the educational performance of students and teachers.
In this study, a survey tool for students and a survey tool for teachers were developed to analyze the educational effects of spatial innovation as described above.
E. Analyzing validity of research tools
In this study, the analysis targets were applied differently depending on the stage. First, about 50% of middle school students who finally participated in the survey were randomly selected, and the items were confirmed by performing exploratory factor analysis, reliability, and confirmatory factor analysis on the data of the primary group. Then, the final question was confirmed by justifying the final question for the remaining 50% of the secondary group of middle school students. By using the data of elementary and high school students to verify the cross-validity of the questions confirmed through this process, it was confirmed that this question could be used by all elementary, middle, and high school students.
In addition, for the teacher group, an exploratory factor analysis, reliability, and confirmatory factor analysis were performed on 50% of the data of the primary group randomly selected regardless of the school level, and then the remaining 50% of the secondary group were evaluated. The final question was confirmed by checking the degree of goodness of the test for the confirmed question.
Among the tools for students, the total number of questions for the measurement of psychological parameters was 77 questions, and 3 of the first developed questions were excluded. In elementary, middle and high school students, it is possible to measure with the same question in all groups.
Among the teachers’ tools, the total number of questions for the measurement of psychological parameters was composed of 79 questions, excluding 8 of the first developed questions.
