Liquid-phase catalytic degradation of polyethylene (PE) wax was studied on MFI, MOR and BEA zeolite catalysts, to clarify the effects of the Si/Al molar ratio, particle size and silica-modification on the external surface. Conversions of PE wax, yields of gas and liquid products, and product compositions over zeolite catalysts were examined at various reaction conditions. The conversion of PE wax on MOR catalysts varied with their Si/Al molar ratio, but showed a volcano plot with a maximum for the catalyst with a Si/Al ratio of 12. Although the catalytic degradation was carried out on acid sites, too high concentration of acid sites brought about heavy carbon deposits resulting in low conversion. The particle size of MFI catalysts strongly influenced the extent of the catalytic degradation at the liquid-phase. The MFI catalyst with the smallest particle size showed the highest activity, due to its large external surface. The product distribution was narrow on the catalyst with a large particle size because the degradation was mainly carried out in the zeolite pore. The silica-modification of the external surface was effective for the catalyst with a low activity, because a fast deactivation by the carbon deposit was suppressed. due to the masking of acid sites on the external surface. The conversions of PE wax were significantly improved by the silica-modification on MOR(10)-1.5 and MFI(50)-3.0 catalysts, because pore blockage with carbon was retarded. Since catalyst particles were surrounded by melted polymer molecules and the concentration of cracked hydrocarbon was high in zeolite pore in the liquid-phase catalytic degradation of PE wax, the effect of carbon deposition on the catalytic activity of the zeolite was significant. The liquefaction rate of PE wax was high on the zeolite catalyst with a large and sinusoidal pore, a suitable acid concentration and strength, and low activity on the external surface. The silica-modification on the external surface was effective for enhancing the life-time of the zeolite catalyst with poor activity by suppressing heavy carbon deposits. Practically. the BEA(13) catalyst composed of small particles showed the best activity because its suitable pore structure and the weak strength of the acid sites suppressed severe deactivation.
