The aim of this thesis is to elaborate how willingess of states, their relative distribution of capabilities, and threats they perceive against each other influence patterns of conflict. Independent variables of the thesis are willingness, relative distribution of capabilities and threat states in conflict perceive against each other. Dependent variables are intensity and patterns of conflict. To examine correlations between these variables, I use Senkaku islands disputes between China and Japan in my dissertation.
Main hypotheses are two fold. First : the higher the willingness of states in conflict on the issues, the narrower the power gap between the states, the more threat they feel against each other, the degree of conflict is more likely to intensify. Second: if willingness and relative capability of one of the states in conflict, and threat perception it feel against the other are higher and bigger, it is likely to take the lead of conflict. Theses are to prove that how willingness, relative capability and threat-perception influence patterns and intensity of conflict. The degree of conflict is likely to increase when behavior of states in conflict stand face to face. Intensity of their behavior is mostly likely to be affected by willingness, relative capabilities and percept ion(threat).
To prove these two hypothesis, I conduct a empirical analysis and examine correlations between willingness, capabilities and threat and degree of conflict. Willingness, capability and threat, and degree of conflict of both nations are examined from when territorial disputes started to the present. To measure each actor's capability, each actor's Gross National Product(GNP), military expenditure are used to develop the capability index. Willingness of China and Japan to obtain Senkaku islands as their territories is examined, based on its economic and strategic values, current international order and the degree of dissatisfaction of each actor. Perception of threat of each actor is examined in three areas : security, economy and history. To examine the degree of conflict, I follow COPDAB(Conflict and Peace Data Bank) measurement procedure. All the events occurred concerning the islands dispute between China and Japan also quantified from 1968 when the territorial disputes started to the present.
The Senkaku Islands is very important both for China and Japan because of its possible natural resources and its geographical implication as a key sea lane. Dissatisfaction with the existing regional order and threat they perceive against each other are making higher their willingness to claim this islands as their territories. The degree of threat didn't changed dramatically not until the end of the Cold War. The demise of the Cold War, however, has changed almost everything. During the Cold War period, with economic and military cooperation China and Japan did not showed threat seriously against each other. During the post-Cold War era, however, their level of dissatisfaction together with a power-transition situation increase the likelihood of conflict in the region.
China and Japan had redistribution of power only once since 1968. It was China's dominance from 1968 to 1977. Power transition by Japan occurred between 1978 and 1983. Then Japan's dominance ut ill 1996. From 1997 to the present it has be another power transition period by China. In terms of degree of conflict four period can be categorized: China's dominance from 1968 to the mid 1970, both countries' matching up from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. Japan's dominance till the late 1990s, and both countries' matching up to the present.
Looking at the patterns of conflict based on willingness, distribution of power, and threat-perception in case of Senkaku islands disputes between China and Japan 2 hypotheses mentioned earlier are proved to be plausible. That is to say, the higher the willingness of states in conflict on the is sues, the narrower the power gap between the states, the more threat they feel against each other, the degree of conflict is more likely to intensify. However if willingness and relative capability of one of the states in conflict, and threat it feel against the other are much higher and bigger, it is likely for the dominant state to take the lead of conflict. Therefore willingness, relative capability and perception(threat) have definite influence on patterns and intensity of conflict.
