This paper represents a study on the illustrations appeared the newspaper novels in the early modern times of Korea. The purpose of the study is to examine the social and cultural backgrounds, the illustrators and the developmental aspects of the novel illustrations through the analysis of the works from 1910s to 1920s.
The newspaper novel illustrations are visual arts found only in Korea and Japan and therefore the newspaper novel illustrations of Korea have direct relations with those of Japan. As one of the mass media developed in the formation period of the modern age in Japan, newspapers carried serial novels as features and inserted illustrations which were later adopted by Korean newspapers in the modernization period. The newspaper novel illustrations in Japan succeeded to the 'kusazoshi(草雙紙)' of the modern times and their early forms and styles can be found in the and the of the early stage of the newspapers.
In the early modern age of Korea, the printing techniques were introduced from Japan and the newspapers emerged with the development of the printing technology. The Korean newspapers followed the editing and formation of the Japanese newspapers and this led to the insertion of drawings in the serial novels of the newspapers. Considering the fact that the newspapers are printed in large quantities and distributed to a great number of people, it can be said that the illustrations of the newspaper novels were spread and disseminated in the form of reprinted art.
In Korea, the first instance of the newspaper novel illustration can be found in the illustrations of the novel 『Choonoichoon(春外春)』 published serially in the in 1912. The illustrations in the Korean newspapers were created by Japanese illustrators until 1921 when Kim Chang-hwan, the first newspaper novel illustrator in Korea, appeared. In many cases, the Japanese illustrators left their signatures only in their illustrations and it is difficult to confirm the real names of the illustrators. Tsuruta Gorou(鶴田吾郞) is one of the illustrators who drew the most illustrations. The Japanese illustrators produced different illustrations each time employing a variety of expressive techniques and drawing methods. It appears that the production techniques of the Japanese illustrators were later used as references by the Korean illustrators in their works. The Korean illustrators who were active in the 1920s include Ahn Seok-joo, Lee Sang-beom, Noh Soo-hyun, Lee Seung-man, Kim Bok-jin, Dangok, and Cheong-Sa saeng. Most of the illustrators were engaged in the design, cartoon and novel illustration of the newspapers while carrying out creative activities through the Chosun Art Exhibition as painters. Accordingly, their representation of illustrations followed the observation styles like figure painting, nude painting, indoor sedentary figure, book-reading women while expressing figures in other forms, thus attempting to differentiate the illustrations by providing them with the genre's characteristics. Ahn Seok-joo attempted new ideas by applying diverse styles of Western paintings to his illustrations and this reflects his intention to employ the newspaper novel illustrations as a means of professional literary art movement. Besides, the novel illustrations were produced in new forms with the adoption of woodblock styles, materials and photo and film angles, playing a great role in evoking the reader's interests.
However, the illustrations in the newspaper novels were created based on the plots of the serial novels and therefore they can be classified into several characteristic scenes and expressions that include conversation scenes, expression of romance, conflicts and notions, and background-depicting scenes.
The illustrations of the newspaper novels in Korea began with the development of printing influenced by Japan and the emergence of the newspapers and the masses. The study analyzed and classified the illustrations into several types that reflected the situations of the art circles between 1910s and 1920s. In so doing, this study showed that the Korean illustrators succeeded to the production of the novel illustrations by the Japanese illustrators and helped the expression methods remain alive. In addition, the Korean illustrations reflected the academic methods of description characteristic to the government-led exhibitions while attempting to produce new scenes depending upon the skills and abilities of the illustrators and their situations.
