The purposes of this study were to examine the conditions of finishing on the fabrics after synthesizing melamine formaldehyde(M/F) microcapsules containing octadecane one of phase change materials(PCMs) and furnish fundamental data for commercial using as active sportswear through evaluations such as launderability, physical property, and clothing suitability.
As the first step of this study, M/F microcapsules containing octadecane were synthesized by the interfacial polymerization method and then, were analyzed the size, shape, and thermal storage/release properties using FT-IR, SEM, and DSC. The very next step was coating the cotton, polyester, and cotton/polyester blended fabrics with the microcapsules under various conditions such as curing temperature/time and concentration by Screen Printing Method(SPM).
The thermal properties and durability of the treated fabrics were examined and were evaluated by DSC and the state of the microcapsules attachment was visualized by SEM after repeated launderings.
For the purpose of evaluating the adhesive method, the fabrics were coated by Knife-Over-Roll(KOR) which was to be compared with SPM. Mechanical properties by KES-FB system and physical properties such as air permeability and moisture absorption of treated fabrics, which were coated by KOR and SPM respectively, were measured.
Using SPM, 100% cotton and polyester fabrics were coated with microcapsules under the condition of 30% microcapsule concentration and 110℃ /1min curing temperature/time, optimum treatment condition for the evaluation of clothing suitability. Using the experimental clothing made from the treated fabric, the objective temperature perception like skin temperature and microclimate temperature/humidity and subjective comfort like thermal, humidity, and overall sensation were evaluated through the wear performance test.
Results were the same as following:
1. The synthesizing of microcapsules was confirmed through analyzing their morphology using FT-IR. The mean diameter of microcapsules ranged 1 to 1.5㎛, and their shape were spherical by SEM. The core content and encapsulation efficiency were confirmed by analyzing DSC.
2. The optimum treatment temperature/time combination to obtain the best thermal storage/release properties from microcapsules treated fabrics was 110℃ /1min. The thermal storage/release properties of treated fabrics increased as microcapsules concentration increased.
3. In the result of testing launderability, thermal properties after laundering start decreasing after 5 times.
4. In mechanical properties, bending and shear rigidities of treated fabrics increased, which meant the coated fabrics were stiffer and harder to bend and shear than others. And mean deviation of surface roughness of treated fabrics increased. The treated fabrics exhibited lower air ventilation and higher moisture absorption than the untreated ones.
5. The changes in mean skin temperature and microclimate temperature/ humidity of the participants who wore clothing treated with microcapsules were less than those of the participants who wore untreated one. And subjects felt treated clothing was less warm and less humid than untreated one. Overally, treated clothing with microcapsules containing octadecane was more comfortable than untreated one.
