Recently chitosan has been focusing on the role of a potential and natural resource with antimicrobial effect. The purpose of this study is to conform antimicrobial effect of chitosans(C-1, C-2). C-1 and C-2 were produced for investigation of antimicrobial activities against pathogenic microorganisms. The molecular weights of C-1, C-2 were determined as 1.07×10^(6), l.l×10^(5), respectively. The degree of deacetylation of C-1, C-2 determined by colloid titration method were 94.55% and 97.61%, respectively. C-1 solutions exhibited growth inhibiting activities for most of microorganisms tested, and C-2 solutions exhibited growth inhibiting activities for most microorganisms tested except Candida albicans. Minimum inhibitory concentrations(M1C) of C-1, C-2 for Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella choleraesuis, Klebsiella pneumoniae. Escherichia coli were under 200ppm concentration, whereas MIC of C-1, C-2 for Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus were above 200ppm concentration and MIC of C-1, C-2 for Candida albicans were not measured until l000ppm concentration of C-1, C-2 solutions. Antimicrobial effect in broth culture were determined by cell counting of living cells. The antimicrobial activity of C-2 in broth culture were higher than C-1. The antimicrobial activity of C-1, C-2 for Candida albicans were not showed until 1000ppm concentration of their solutions. The antimicrobial effect of chitosan was affected by their environments and different with their molecular weight. The protective ability of microorganism may be changed by surrounding.
