The prediction of aeroacoustic noise has many difficulties in selection of the spatial field and the time field. Researches have been reported to overcome difficulties in aeroacoustics. In this dissertation, Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation based on acoustic analogy is modified and three source terms (thickness noise, loading noise and quadrupole noise) in FW-H equation are examined for the prediction of turbulence noise. In order to verify the application of FW-H equation and to examine the size effect of integration surface, a simple 2D problem is investigated. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is first conducted by using a commercial package to evaluate flow field characteristics and to support the acoustic analysis. FW-H equation is adopted to predict aeroacoustic noise patterns. When using the result of 2D based CFD calculations, acoustic noise is over predicted in amplitude due to the discrepancy between 2D simulation and 3D real flow characteristics. However, if adequate correlation length in integration is used, the predicted acoustic amplitude agrees well with experiment. Predictions using extended integration surface in FW-H equation show that results contain the characteristics of quadrupole noise term that needs volume integration. The use of an integration surface that cuts through the cylinder wake does not appear to adversely affect the results with the FW-H formulation. By examine the Lighthill’s stress tensor, the factor that affect the integration surface can be shown and the predicted aeroacoustic results can be explained. As an application of noise prediction, an information storage device (DVD drives ) that consists of tray and rotating disk is selected. Computational fluid dynamics is conducted to evaluate flow field characteristics inside tray due to the high-speed disk rotation, and to support the acoustic analysis. The integral solution for quadrupole volume source is included to identify the turbulence noise generated inside the DVD tray. The strength of the sound pressure level with respect to rotation speed shows a tendency of increasing thickness noise at high-speed disk rotation. Near-field noise is strongly affected by the flow field characteristic, which is caused by the complex inside shape of the tray. For a mid-field, as a result of combination of three noise sources, different sound noise patterns appear in comparison with those in the near field. Especially the quadrupole noise plays as a counterpart of thickness noise or loading noise depending on rotation speed. Because of the three source terms in the FW-H equation have physical meanings, their physical basis provide information that can be used when designing quieter devices, and the prediction of aeroacoustic noise considering turbulence noise is applicable in devices containing high-speed disk rotation.
