This study was conducted to investigate the partial oxidation of methane to methanol. The catalysts used were mixed oxide catalysts prepared with base components of Cu and MoO₃, and MoO₃ supported on SiO₂, MgO, and Al₂O₃. To screen the best catalyst for methnaol synthesis, the partial oxidation reaction was performed using a fixed bed tubular reactor at 33 bar and 480℃. Bi-Cs-Mg-Cu-Mo catalyst showed the highest activity. Using this catalyst, methane conversion and methanol selectivity were studied at 450 ∼ 480℃ and 20 ∼ 46 bar, with oxygen concentration of 5.3 ∼ 7.7 mol% and several flow rates(39.5, 62.5, and 80.1m1/min). The results were compared with the results of homogeneous reaction performed at the same conditions. The O₂-TPD, XRD, and BET methods were used to characterize the catalysts. With the O₂-TPD results of Bi-Cs-Mg-Cu-Mo catalyst, it was found that the amount of oxygen desorbed from the catalyst at higher temperature was larger than other catalysts. It is supposed that a catalyst releasing lattice oxygen easily at higher temperature would be a suitable catalyst for methanol synthesis. The methane conversion of the homogeneous and catalytic reactions increased with temperature. The methanol selectivity of the homogeneous reaction decreased with increasing temperature. However, the selectivity of catalytic reactions increased with temperature. For both homogeneous and catalytic reactions, the methane conversions were similar values of around 5%. This may be to the low oxygen concentration However, methanol selectivity of the catalytic reaction was 10% higher than that of homogeneous one. The feed flow rates have no signigicant effects on the methane conversion and methanol selectivity for the catalytic and homogeneous reaction.
