This study purposes to examine the effects of free drawing, idea sharing, narrated story-telling, and dramatized play on children's drawing performance and to present basic resources for a better art teaching method for preschool children through the results of this study. The subjects for this study were 88 5-year-old children from 2 Kwangju-based kindergartens B and D. The subjects were divided into 4 groups of randomly selected 22 children each for the drawing group, The idea sharing group, the narrated story-telling group, and the dramatized play group, respectively. In the free drawing group, children were asked to draw on whatever topic they liked without any artificial elaboration such as idea sharing with teachers, narrated story-telling, or dramatized plays. In the idea sharing group, in order to maintain the relevance with the narrated storytelling group and the dramatized play group, children were asked to share theirs only through verbal communication on certain topics related to the same story with tat told to other 2 groups, and then were asked to draw pictures on those topics. In the narrated story-telling group, the teacher told the children a story by using various looks and tones, gestures and motions, and the children were asked to draw pictures. In the dramatized play group, children first listened to a story and then they participated in a dramatized play on the story, and finally were asked to draw pictures. Chi(1999),s "Evaluation Measure for Drawing" was used for the purpose of this study and each of the 4 groups were experimented twice a week for 5 weeks, totalling to 10 experiments. This study progressed in the order of pre-experiment examination, experiment, and post-experiment examination. The collected data were computer-processed by using SAS, and ANOVA was applied to identify the differences among the 4 groups (free drawing, idea sharing, narrated story-telling, and dramatized play). The post-experiment verification relied on the Scheffe´'s method for the specific identification of the groups showing significant difference. The results were as follows: First, statistically significant differences were observed among the 4 groups in the evaluation of the lower level items of drawing technique such as "the depiction of various shapes," "the number of depicted shapes," and "the variety in color use." In other words, the scores on all lower level items of children's drawing technique were significantly high in the order of the dramatized play groups, the narrated story-telling group, the idea sharing group and finally the free drawing group with the dramatized play group having the highest score. Second, statistically significant differences were also observed in the evaluation of the lower level items of drawing organization such as "the harmonious organization of the picture," "detailed depiction," "the connectedness of expressions," and "the merge of basic figures." That is, the scores on all lower level items of children's drawing organization were significantly high in the order of the dramatized play group, the narrated story-telling group, the idea sharing group and finally the free drawing group again with the dramatized play group having the highest score. Third, statistically significant differences were also observed in the evaluation of the lower level items of drawing expression such as "the idea on the topic," children's performance on imaging the ideas," "the presentation of the title and the story of the picture," and "originality." That is, the scores on all lower level items of children's drawing expression were significantly high in the order of the dramatized play group, the narrated story-telling group, the idea sharing group and finally the free drawing group again with the dramatized play group having the highest score. The results of this study indicated that idea-sharing with teachers is more effective than children's free drawing, and narrated story-telling is more effective than idea-sharing with teachers, and dramatized play is more effective than narrated story-telling for the enhancement of preschool children's drawing performance. These results can be used in the course of searching for a better effective method of art teaching in the preschool educational setting of kindergartens.
