The purposes of this study were to investigate the nurses knowledge level, attitude, and general experiences on restraints and to find out relationship between knowledge level and attitude in order to decrease the use of restraints in hospital settings. Data were collected from 530 nurses working in two teaching hospitals and 6 general hospitals, which have more than 200 beds in K city using questionnaire from July 15 to July 31, 2002. The instrument used to find out the level of knowledge on restraints was originally developed by Janelli(1994) and translated and readjusted by researcher based on Park's(1997) translation. To measure the attitude toward restraints, instrument composed of 22 items were developed by researcher. The results of this study were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation using SPSS PC+ Program. The results of this study were; 1. About 64% of nurse was below 29 years old and 61% of nurse was graduated from diploma program. Almost 81% of nurses worked in rotating shift and 81.4% of nurse was staff nurse. 2. Knowledge level on restraints was 9.37 point out of 13 point and the attitude was 3.38 in 5 point Likert scale. These mean that even Korean nurse do not have much knowledge on restraints, but they tend to avoid the applying restraints to patients. 3. There was positive correlation(r=.308, p=.000) between the knowledge level and attitude toward restraints of nurses. 4. According to the item analysis on nurses experience on restraints, about 91% of nurses had experience in applying restraint, and among them 56.4% had experienced complications regarding the use of restraints. About 93% of nurses answered that they should have clinical guideline/or protocol on their hospitals but only 11.8% of nurses had seen the clinical guideline/or protocol on restraints. Only 7.4% nurse participated in educational program on the use of restraints more than once. 5. Forty four percent of nurses answered doctors order is necessary applying restraints, 35.3% of nurse were unnecessary, and the rest of nurses answered no idea. 6. Tertiary hospital nurses had less know level and more preference in the use of restraints than Secondary nurses(t=4.34, p=.05). Intensive care unit nurses had more preference on the use of restraints than other specialty unit nurses(F=5.32, p=.00). According to the above results, more educational opportunities for the appropriate use of restraints were required to Koran nurses and strategies, including development of clinical guideline/protocol on restraints, to decrease use of restraints in hospital settings are required. By doing these, the use of restraints in patient care settings can be decreased and quality of nursing care can be improved.
