The purpose of the study was to understand perception and attitude of nurses on applying restraints to patients after healthcare accreditation. The research subjects were nurses working at a university hospital in Daegu City. Data were collected from April, 11, 2017 to April, 21 using self administered questionnaire, and total 148 questionnaire data were analyzed. this study was approved from Institutional Review Board of Yeungnam University (YU 2017-03-003-001). The mean score of perception on using restraints to patients was 3.34±1.15 on a 5-point scale. The 3 items of the highest score for allowable restraints use were 1) 'to prevent removal of therapeutic catheter randomly(4.09±1.06)', 2) 'to protect of staff and other patients from the patient`s physical attack(3.74±1.13)', and 3) to protect from fall down the bed(3.80±1.22) respectively. The mean score of attitude on using restraints to patients was 3.20±0.98 out of 5. The 3 items of the highest score for using restraints were as follows; 1) 'When used, it must always record on the EMR or chart.' 2) 'restraints must be applied by the doctor prescribes,' and 3) 'family member has a right to refuse restraints to patient.‘ 40.5% of the nurses in this study experienced side effects, 40.5% of the nurses experienced conflict with family members and 33.1% of the nurses expressed their feelings for ethical dilemma in relation with the use of restraints, and 90.5% of the nurses were educated on restraint use. There was no significant difference between nurses` demographic characteristics and attitude toward attributes relating to the use of restraint, and a positive correlation(r=0.357, p<0.001) between the nurse's perceptions and attitudes on the use of restraints. The study results showed that nurses were well educated about using restraints, but experienced the side effects, conflicting with family members, and ethical dilemma about the use of restraints as well. Those findings suggest that rules and refined guidelines on restraints use, and continuous job training relating to efficient restraints use were needed to prevent side effects and reduce nurses` ethical conflicts on restraints use.
