University freshmen students' understanding of concepts on chemical reaction rates and chemical equilibrium and their correlation원문보기

The purpose of this research was to recognize the university students' understanding of chemical reaction rates and chemical equilibrium concepts, and to find the correlation between them. The subject of investigation consisted of 84 freshmen students attending H university situated at Chung-Buk. Writing tests and interviews were conducted for this research.
The results showed that 70.6% of the university students understood concepts of chemical reaction rates. The understanding of the effect of temperature, catalyst, and concentration on chemical reaction rates were high. However, the understanding of rate changes of forward and reverse reactions were low. And 55.3% of the students understood the concepts of chemical equilibrium. A large majority of the university students didn't understand that chemical equilibrium happens in one system rather than in two systems. Also, the students understood the chemical equilibrium as a static equilibrium rather than a kinetic equilibrium. On the other hand, the Pearson correlation coefficient between the understanding of chemical reaction rate concepts and the understanding of chemical equilibrium concepts was 0.826, which was high.
In conclusion, the emphasis of the relation between forward and reverse reactions will help the students understand the concepts of chemical equilibrium. Also, the development of teaching-learning methods that can relate chemical equilibrium concepts to chemical reaction rate concepts is necessary.
