Phonics is one of teaching methods to improve children's word reading abilities. It is utilized in English-speaking countries to teach reading in native language education. Elementary schools in Korea, in which English is taught as a foreign language, currently adopt the same phonics used in teaching English as a native language. It is, however, necessary to consider whether phonics teaching methods used for native language education are also suitable for Korean elementary school students, who learn English as a foreign language. In this study, two phonics teaching methods, one-to-one method and a method using onset and rime dividing a word into syllables based on vowels, were examined in an attempt to look for a phonics teaching method that fits better for Korean elementary school students. Specifically, the effects of the one-to-one phonics teaching method and of the onset/rime-based phonics teaching method on children's reading abilities and on interest in English learning were compared and analyzed. For these purposes, two homogeneous groups of 66 fifth-grade students at M Elementary School in Mungyeong, Gyeongsangbuk-Do were selected as the subjects through a preliminary test using the alphabet and simple word reading on the level of fourth grade students. Because some of the students were found to have trouble recognizing the alphabet in the preliminary test, the alphabet was taught first before the experiment was conducted. Then, the one-to-one phonics teaching method and the onset/rime-based phonic teaching method were instructed to the two test groups, respectively. After the subjects were taught in each phonics teaching method, change in the subjects' word reading abilities was measured through a posterior word reading ability test and change in the subjects' interest in English learning was measured through a questionnaire survey in order to determine which phonics method has more positive effects on Korean elementary school students' word reading abilities and on interest in English learning. The results of the experiment were verified through t-test using SPSS PC+ (version 10.0). The results of this study are as follows. First, as for the improvement of word reading abilities, the one-to-one phonic teaching method appeared to have more positive effects on students' reading abilities than the onset/rime-based phonics teaching method. However, the ability to guess the pronunciation of new words on the basis of analogy was not improved with no significant differences between the two groups. More positive effects of the one-to-one phonics teaching method on the reading abilities seem to stem from a difference in syllable structure between Korean and English: In Korean, onset consonant is more closely associated with the following vowel than the coda consonant (left-branching), while English has the syllable structure where the coda consonant is more closely affiliated with the vowel, constituting an intermediate node, rhyme, than the onset consonant (right-branching). This difference in syllable structure between the two languages leads Korean students to have problem dividing a syllable based on the onset and the rime and thus to obtain less positive effects on learning phonics from the syllable-based onset/rime phonics method than from the one-to-one phonics method. Second, according to the result of the questionnaire survey, interest in English learning was not improved in both groups with no significant differences between the two groups. No improvement in interest in learning English can be attributed to the fact that the two phonics teaching methods were carried out mainly by hearing and repeating the presented materials by rote. In conclusion, the one-to-one phonics teaching method appeared to be more effective in improving children's word reading abilities but to have no significant positive effects on children's word reading abilities by analogy and on their interest in English learning.
