The purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which high school students understand chemical reactions involving most basic and important concepts of chemistry in the field of chemistry curriculum. Results of the study can be summarized as follows. The subjects of this study consist of 67 students of 1st, and 3rd year in a high school of Pusan, and were examined with concept test sheet, and 20 students of them were interviewed. The concrete research questions of this study are established as follows. First, what are the concept aspects of chemical reaction presented by responses of high school students? Second, what are categories of the misconceptions of chemical reaction based on the different year of high school students? The pilot test was performed in advance to figure out the concept extent of subject students on the chemical reaction and with that result, four concept aspects necessary to form the scientific concept of students such as the nature of chemical change, chemical change and energy, the driving force of chemical change and the students' view of particle, were selected by discussing with two chemistry-education specialists and eight science teachers. Five experimental subjects of state change and chemical reaction as the research contents were experimented by students for themselves and analyzed by the concept test sheet and the personal interview. Results of this study could be summarized as follows. 1. On the prediction of products involved in the nature of chemical reaction, most of 1st and 3rd year students didn't have any concepts(water vapor, steam, vapor), and many of the 1st year students couldn't distinguish chemical reaction and physical reaction. On the state of products, most of 1st and 3rd year students didn't consider the abundant liquid, due to the shortage of overall sight on the products from the gas or the solid producing reaction. On the mass change, they responded that mass was preserved in the closed system, and they also had many misconceptions on the gas producing or the solid producing reaction as follows. Misconception conceiving heat as mass(1st) Mass is reduced as much as reduced volume of candle.(1st) Mass is preserved due to the gas production as much as used material.(1st) Mass is increased when the solid is formed.(1st) Mass is reduced when the gas is produced.(1st and 3rd) 2. The 1st year students understood the chemical reaction and energy with the view of the physical change(state change), and the 3rd year students understood comings and goings of energy with the view of chemical change. The misconception of chemical reaction and energy is like this; No comings and goings of energy when reacted without heat.(1st) Heat is absorbed for combustion(1st) Spontaneous reaction : heat absorbtion reaction(1st and 3rd) 3. The 1st year students understood the driving force of chemical reaction as the difference(state change) of heat and temperature, and the 3rd year students showed a variety of understanding such as the difference of heat and temperature(state change), the ionized tendency, the different bonding force between ions, etc. 4. On the students' view of particle, the 1st year students didn't form the concept of particle and ion yet, but the 3rd year students had that concept. From the survey of results of this study, it can be said that the 1st year students were in shortage of forming the scientific concept for understanding chemical reaction, and the 3rd year students formed the scientific concept of chemical reaction, but were also in shortage of integrating understanding. And also various misconceptions earned from this study could be used effectively as the basic teaching materials.
