Preschoolers are usually footloose without being bound by any specific regulations, but they have to follow school rules when they enter elementary school. Some children often leave their seats in class without listening to their teachers, have a frequent fight with classmates or fail to fare with them, being left out. Those types of maladjusted behaviors make it difficult for them to adjust themselves to school. The purpose of this study was to help encourage children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, the most frequent problem behavior of mentally retarded children, to build a good ego- identity, improve their attention and curb their impulsiveness. It's ultimately attempted to assist them to be better adjusted to their home and school and positively respond to various problem situations. The subjects in this study were two mentally retarded children who got 40 or higher scores when every child in an elementary school was assessed with CTRS-10 for teacher. After they were selected, an art program was implemented in 16 sessions for two months, twice a week. Before and after the program was conducted, they were observed by this researcher, and pictures drawn by them were analyzed by K-HTP. And whether or not there was any improvement in their maladjusted behaviors including leaving their seats, hyperactivity, short attention span and poor completion of pictures was investigated by a child-behavior rating scale and a far-reaching rating scale. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. The firsthand observation by this researcher showed that there were some individual variances in the behavioral changes of the children with ADHD, but that their action of leaving their seats, hyperactivity, attention span and completion of pictures made a positive change. 2. When their pictures were analyzed with K-HTP to track their psychological and emotional changes, their reaction was opposite, as one felt more secure and the other felt more uneasy. 3. As the child-behavior rating scale was utilized to identify their behavioral change, they showed a positive change, though there was some individual variance. 4. When the far-reaching rating scale was employed, their attention deficit and hyperactivity made a favorable change, and their social skills got better. Although it's not easy to produce more objective results, the effort by this study to have the children with ADHD absorbed in doing what they liked to do had a positive impact on changing their behaviors. In order to prevent and treat the attention deficit and hyperactivity of mentally retarded elementary schoolers, more opportunities should be provided for them to express their feelings through art, as they find it delightful, and it will enable them to tide over difficulties at home and school.
