The Kyokpo basin situated in Buangun, Chollabukdo, is one of the small cretaceous basins developed in and around the southwest side of Ogcheon Belt of the Korean Peninsula. The lithologies composing the Kyokpo basin are gneiss, andesite, granite, Kyokpon formation, rhyolite tuff and rhyolite in ascending order. The Gyeopori Formation is unconformally underlain with the basement rock composed of gneiss, andesite and granite , and consists of detrital deposits with about 250m thickness. The tuff is come to crystal tuff that most particles consist of quartz and feldspar crystals, and is classified by volcaniclastic flow deposits according to depositional characteristics. Several deformation structures are discovered on the lower parts and surfaces of volcaniclastic flow deposits. Cross-bedding, flow wrinkles, flow grooves and lineation structures that appear on the lower rock unit and surface of the pyroclastic flow deposits in Area KP 1 and Area KP 2 are developed in relation with both viscosity by temperature and transport speed, and the lithology of underlain deposits. The Cracking structure developed in Area KP 3 is involved with sudden cooling of hot pyroclastic flow deposits. The development of joints in Area KP 4 and Area KP 5 is made by the cooling of hot pyroclastic flow deposits with good heat-conserving mechanism. The flame structures and peperites that are discovered in boundary between pyroclastic flow deposits and lower shale in Area KP 4 and Area KP 5 are developed in relation with viscosity, cooling rate and chemical compositions. The volcaniclastic flow deposits of Area KP 1 to Area KP 5 are deposited on the edge of the lakeside. According to paleocurrent direction, the volcano that drifted volcaniclastic flow was situated on the eastward of the lake.
