Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment(HOME) and Preschool Children's Socio-Emotional Development by Family Structure원문보기

This study examined differences and correlations with the HOME and preschool children's socio-emotional development by sex, nuclear family, and extended family. The subject were 169 four- to five-years old boys and girls and their mothers in Chonan city, Chungnam province. Instruments were the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment(HOME), the Socio-Emotional Developmental Rating Scale, and a questionnaire for the home environmental variables. Data were analyzed by ANCOVA, partial correlation, and Cronbach α. The major findings were as follows; 1) there were higher score in nuclear family's HOME than extended family's except emotional climate and there were more differences in boy's HOME than girls'. 2) There was higher score in girl's achievement motivation than boy's. 3) The more play materials in nuclear family, the lower children's sense of stability in school. The richer physical environment and play materials in nuclear family, the lower girl's peer interaction, achievement motivation, and curiosity. The higher emotional climate and need gratification and avoidance of restriction in extended family, the lower in children's internal control, achievement motivation, and socio-emotional development total score.
