The objective of this study was to examine the effect of infant teacher's personality traits and teaching characters on young children's social and emotional development. To this end, research issues are as follows: 1. 'What is the effect of infant teacher's demographic features on their personality traits and teaching characters and young children's social and emotional development?' 2. 'What is the correlation among infant teacher's personality traits and teaching characters and young children's social and emotional development?' 3. 'What is the effect of infant teacher's personality traits and teaching characters on young children's social and emotional development?'
Study subjects were 212 infant teachers working for child-care centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. In order to test infant teacher's personality traits, this study used K-KSEG (Kim's Korea Standard Ego Gram) developed by Kim Jong-ho (2009) according to Korean circumstances based on the Egogram for transactional analysis. In order to examine infant teacher's teaching characters, this study used the self-report-type tool for teaching characters developed by Seo Gyeong-hye and etc. (2013) for pre-service teachers and recomposed by Kim Gyeong-ryeong and Seo Eun-hee (2014). And in order to test young children's social and emotional development, this study used the rating scale developed by Kim Ho-in (2010). Collected data were statistically processed using SPSS 26.0 program and such analytic techniques as reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe post hoc test, Pearson product-moment coefficient and multiple regression analysis were used.
Study findings are as follows: First, such infant teacher's demographic features as age, marital status, academic background and teaching career had effect on personality traits and teaching characters. infant teacher's age, marital status, academic background and teaching career and young children's age and gender had effect on children's social and emotional development. Second, regarding the relationship between infant teacher's personality traits and young children's social and emotional development, the adult ego, a sub-variable of personality traits, had a positive correlation with young children's social and emotional development. And infant teacher's teaching characters and young children's social and emotional development had a positive correlation on the whole. Regarding the relationship between infant teacher's personality traits and teaching characters, nurturing parent ego and adult ego, two sub-variables of personality traits, had a positive correlation with all the sub-variables of teaching characters. Third, adult ego, a sub-variable of infant teacher's personality traits, and student passion and calling consciousness, two sub-variables of teaching characters, were verified to be important factors that have effect on young children's social and emotional development. Adult ego, a sub-variable of personality traits, in particular, had a significantly positive effect on all the sub-variables of young children's social and emotional development. Among the sub-variables of teaching characters, student passion had significantly positive effect on basic emotion and social behavior, two sub-variables of young children's social and emotional development, whereas calling consciousness had significantly positive effect on ego conception and self-control. In conclusion, this study could verify the fact that adult ego, a sub-variable of infant teacher's rational and reasonable personality traits, and calling consciousness to teaching profession, a sub-variable of teaching characters, are crucial factors that have significant effect on young children's social and emotional development. This finding is significant in that it confirms the fact that infant teacher's personality traits and teaching characters are important factors for young children's social and emotional development. Therefore, in order to support for young children's social and emotional development, it is necessary to establish teacher education programs and environment with which infant teachers can exert adult ego and strengthen their teaching character. In addition, study findings can be used as basic data on the education of pre-service infant teachers.
