This study was performed to examine the state of functional independence when the patients were discharged by means of FIM and to understand the need for the home nursing care corresponding with the state of functioning, with the 110 patients as the subjects, whose disease has been diagnosed as stroke, and who have been given intensive care, in the stroke center of the Y university hospital, and discharged, from the 1st of September of 2003 through the 31st of November of the same year. The findings of the study were as follows: 1) When they were discharged, their FIM value was the average total of 85.32±37.12 points. In terms of motor function among the lower measures, the highest two items were the eating function of 5.53±2.05 points and the grooming function of 5.14±2.14 points, and the lowest items were locomotion stairs of 3.48±2.20 points and transfer tube and shower of 3.67±2.29 points. In terms of cognitive functions, the highest item was comprehension(5.73±2.06 points) and the lowest item was the function of problems solving(4.86±2.41 points). 2) In terms of the need for the home nursing care by lower categories according to the functional independence, in the physical need, and the sensory and motor needs, the need for the complete dependent group was the highest, and in terms of the need for the emotional support and education and the need for the language problems, the partial dependent group was the highest. 3) In terms of the need for the home nursing care by the execution of the functional independence, in independent groups and partially dependent groups, the need was high in the order of the first aid treatment in emergencies and the education of the measures to cope with them(2.53±0.62, 2.59±0.69), and the explanation of the feeds specially proposed or recommended(2.11±1.03, 2.27±0.90). In the completely dependent groups, in terms of the first aid treatment in emergencies and the education of the measures to cope with them(2.58±0.37) and the care for the paralyzed side(2.58±0.70), the need for the home nursing care was the highest. The lowest need among the three groups was shown in the injection treatment. 4) The need for home nursing care by general features and clinical features was the highest according to the length of the hospitalization period and when both sides were paralyzed, and the need for home nursing care was high when braces have to be used and in cases of speech disorders and cognitive disorders. 5) In terms of the major factors influencing the need for home nursing care, the functional independence measure(FIM) was the variable which has the greatest influence on the need for home nursing care, and the next factor was paralysis. The lower the FIM value was, the higher the need for home nursing care in case of paralysis.
