The Effects of a Postpartum Exercise Program on Postpartum Functional Status, Body Composition, Postpartal Fatigue in Postpartal Women원문보기

This study identifies the effects of a postpartum exercise program on postpartum functional status, body composition, and postpartal fatigue in postpartal women by using a pre-test/post-test design with a non-equivalent control group in a quasi-experimental research. The study was conducted from June 20th, 2004 to August 20th, 2005. During this time, a sample of 46 women (26 experimental group: 20 control group) who were admitted to the postpartum ward of an OB/GYN Center in Gwangju GwangYeokSi after 37-42 weeks of gestation participated in this study. The pre-test measured general characteristics, obstetrical characteristics, exercise related characteristics, body composition, and postpartal fatigue. In this experiment after providing education about exercise, subjects did stretching exercises at home with the aid of a video tape for 4 weeks, 5 times per week for 20-30 minutes per session. After this period a walking program for 4 weeks, 3-5 times per week for 30-50 minutes per session was implemented. All together this exercise program lasted 8 weeks. The post-test was conducted 8 weeks after childbirth and measured postpartum functional status, body composition, and postpartal fatigue. Data analysis using Chi-square test and Fisher’s exact probability test was conducted using SPSS/win version 10.1. The Mann-Whitney U test was used on the research hypotheses to understand the consubstantiality of the dependent variables and the effects of postpartum exercise. The results are as follows. Hypothesis 1: There will be a difference in postpartum functional status between women who participate in postpartum exercise program and women who do not. No statistically significant difference was found. Hypothesis rejected(Z=-.251, p=.401). Hypothesis 2: Women who participate in postpartum exercise program will have higher increased recovery in body composition than women who do not. Hypothesis 2-1: Women who participate in postpartum exercise program will have a greater decrease in body weight than women who do not. A statistical difference was found. Hypothesis supported(Z=-1.905, p=.0285). Hypothesis 2-2: Women who participate in postpartum exercise program will have greater decrease in body mass index (BMI) than women who do not. A statistical difference was found. Hypothesis supported(Z=-2.272, p=.012). Hypothesis 2-3: Women who participate in postpartum exercise program will have greater decrease in body fat mass than women who do not. A statistical difference was found. Hypothesis supported(Z=-3.938, p=.000). Hypothesis 2-4: Women who participate in postpartum exercise program will have greater decrease in the percentage of body fat than women who do not. A statistical difference was found. Hypothesis supported(Z=-3.394, p=.000). Hypothesis 2-5: Women who participate in postpartum exercise program will have greater decrease in the abdominal circumference than women who do not. No statistically significant difference was found. Hypothesis rejected (Z=-1.483, p=.069). Hypothesis 3: There will be a difference in postpartal fatigue between women who participate in postpartum exercise program and women who do not. No statistically significant difference was found. Hypothesis rejected (Z=-.657, p=.256). Through this experiment the women who participated in postpartum exercise decreased their body weight, BMI, and percentage of body fat. As this study has demonstrated, one month of stretching after childbirth followed by a walking exercise program aids in the recovery of postpartum body composition and therefore, consideration should be given to educate women who have given birth.
