Abstract The effect of school''s appearance regulations on teenagers’ adaptation to school Jeonghyun Lee Dept. of Home Economics Graduate school of Korea University The appearance regulations of schools are executed with an intention to make teenagers learn diverse values and norms from school, and induce them to learn behavioral patterns which are suitable for the future social environment. However there exists criticisms of the regulations that they repress physical freedom of the students. This research, by utilizing path models, sought to explore the overall perception and attitudes of students on appearance regulations, and aimed to understand the effect of students'' perceived intensity and perceived importance of appearance regulations, self-esteem, and creativity on their observance level of the regulations, and their adaptation to school. For data collection, a survey was conducted to 866 students, 1st and 2nd graders, from 6 different co-ed high schools in Seoul. The survey included questions regarding students'' perceived intensity, perceived importance, and observance of appearance regulations, as well as their creativity, self-esteem, adaptation to school, and personal characteristics. The result of the analysis showed that students perceived a high intensity of regulation from schools regarding the length and style of hair, yet also high levels of perceived importance and observance on the prominent changes or decorations of hair. Even though there were strict regulations on length of hair, and outer wears from the schools, students showed low level of observance on those categories, which meant implicates existence of conflicts between the schools and the students around those aspects. There were differences in students perceptions of and observations to appearance regulations depending on their personal characteristics such as gender, residence, grade, personal allowances, and academic performance. The perceived regulation intensity, perceived importance, observance level, self-esteem and creativity, all affected different aspects of school environment, such as teachers, friends, classes, and regulations through diverse paths. As for the path-model of overall school adaptation, self-esteem had the positive direct effect on adaptation level of the school environment, but it had negative indirect effect on the perceived importance of appearance regulations, which had positive effect on school adaptation. As for creativity, it had positive direct effect on school adaptation, and also had positive effect on the perceived intensity, which had negative effect on school adaptation. The perceived intensity and perceived importance of apparel regulations had positive effects on the observance level, however the observance level did not have any effect on school adaptation. This research will provide useful educational implications in guiding students in terms of appearance management. Students perceived high levels of perceived intensity of appearance regulations and also high levels of observance, but low levels of perceived importance of the regulations. This means students were only being obedient to the forceful regulations rather than internalizing them. In order to help the students adapt to the school better while preserving their self-esteem, an educational strategy which reduces the appearance regulations or emphasizes the importance of those regulation may be required.
