The aim of this study was to examine the influence of voluntary stride length increment on energy cost efficiency during walking exercise. Nine students majoring in physical education who had no health problems were recruited (VO_(2)max 60.7±8.1 ml·kg·^(-1)min^(-1)) and participated in exercise program for 8 weeks. The exercise program consisted of stretching (coxa stretch, lunge, knee hopping) and walking (fast walking with long stride with metro-norm, 20 min walking with gradual increment on a treadmill at 6.4 km/h), and strength training (squat, back extension, leg curl; 3 sessions at an intensity of 10 RM) for 1 hr/session 5 tunes/w. Warming up and cooling down was 10 min long each. Oxygen consumption (VO_(2)), heart rate (BR) and number of stride in each speed (2.5, 4, 5, 6, 7.5 km/h) as well as 10% and 20% of incremental stride length of each individual was evaluated. The results of this study were as follow; 1. Number of preferred stride at each speed decreased after the exercise program (5.8%, 11.8%, 9.9%, 8.0%, 8.6%; p<.05), but VO_(2) and HR showed no significant differences (p<.05). 2. VO_(2) and HR at each speed showed gradual increase by reduction of stride frequency (p<.05). The changes of VO_(2) and HR by speed also increased by increment of speed (p<.05). But no changes were observed between before and after the exercise program (p<.05). 3. U-shape curve by speed and reduction of efficiency due to decrease of stride frequency were observed when the efficiency was calculated by VO_(2) per unit time (p<.05). However, no statistical difference was found in efficiency between before and after the program (p<.05). The exercise program increased stride length, but no changes were observed in efficiency. More increment of stride length appeared to be appropriate to produce a change of efficiency.
