These days, as the expected life span of people is higher, the population of old age is increasing. It leads to an aging society which results in more demands of better welfare service for old age. Accordingly, senile dementia, one of the representative senile diseases, appeared as an important issue of our society. As it is difficult for the patients with senile dementia to lead normal living independently, their dependancy on families and society is higher. However, as social change such as increase of working woman and nuclear families happened, there is a limit to support of the patients with senile dementia by their families. So, the senile dementia was raised as a serious social problem beyond family one.
However, as there were no exact and extensive data about senile dementia, such as its occurrence rate and the population of the patients with senile dementia, there was little or no improvement of the service. Service development for the patients with senile dementia is poor, service facilities and human resources for them lack, there is a limit to service for families of the patients and a governmental policy is passive.
The patients with senile dementia are dependent mainly on families for their care and support. As they need long and regular treatment, more burden is given to families.
This study intended to identify the current state of the senile dementia using bibliography and the Internet network. And it compared our senile dementia service programs with foreign ones. As a result, this study presented service improvement programs for the patients of senile dementia as follows :
First, financial, physical and psychological support should be provided for the families who are exhausted due to care of patients. As many patients prefer home care to care at service facilities, burden to the families is increasing. Therefore, financially, medical care insurance systems should be improved. Physically, staying-home care for the patients should be expanded, and psychologically, regular meetings, resort areas or counseling service for the families should be provided.
Second, the service facilities and professional human resources for the patients are needed. In our country, most of the facilities and welfare service are provided only for the needy people and low-income class. More facilities are needed, but due to low budget for the service. proper care for the patients is not provided. So, more facilities for the senile dementia patients should be prepared and service barriers should be abolished. Related staffs should be reinforced and more training for them should be available.
Third, home care should be reinforced. In our country, it is thought that home care is better than care at service facilities both financially and emotionally. Service programs such as volunteer service, day care service and short-term service should be improved and further expanded.
Fourth, service networks should be improved. As they are pluralistic, cooperation and coordination are not properly achieved and therefore, comprehensive service is not available. So, service networks should be linked each other to provide convenient service for patients and their families.
Finally, it is recommended that normal people should be properly informed of the senile dementia through publicity and education about it.. In the current society, the senile dementia is not a problem to be faced by families alone any longer. Therefore, communities, government and families should endeavor actively to solve the problem of the senile dementia.
