The Effect of AAC Intervention Including Peers on the Communicative Competence of Students with Multiple Disabilities원문보기

The purpose of this study was to examine how AAC intervention including their peers with mild mental retardation affected on the communicative competence of three students with multiple disablities. An experiment was conducted by providing vocabulary acquisition training and communicative training using script to the students with multiple disabilities and by applying an interaction skills program to their peers. Before and after the experiment, pretest, posttest, retention test and generalization test were implemented. The findings of the study were as below: First, the interactive skills program provided to the peers was effective in boosting their communicative interaction skills. All the peers made much progress in interaction skills as like modelling, message confirming, and pause time. That had a positive impact on diversifying the communicative skills of students with multiple disabilities using AAC. Second, AAC intervention including by peers had a good effect on improving the diverse communicative function of students with multiple disabilities. It meant that script-based communication training that was composed of expectant time dealy, verbal facilitation, communication modelling and reinforcement was appropriate for the students with multiple disabilities. Third, AAC intervention including peers was effective in changing the communication roles of students with multiple disabilities. By AAC intervention including peers of the students with multiple disabilities improved initiative communicative role in interaction with peers. Fourth, AAC intervention including by peers was effective in increasing the communication unit rates of the students with multiple disabilities. Compared to their peers, they showed much more increase in communication unit rates, and it implied that their communicative function was diversified and that peers used their interaction skills more often. The above-mentioned findings illustrated the AAC intervention including by peers exercised an influence on diversifying the communicative function of the students with multiple disabilities and letting them take more initiative in communication. Therefore, that had a good effect on raising their communication unit rates. Given the findings of the study, there are some suggestions about future research: First, it's attempted in this study to determine the effect of AAC intervention on the communicative competence of students with multiple disabilities at school during a particular period of time. The geographic scope of future studies should be extended to the community to find out the effect of AAC intervention in other situations. Second, there was any change just in some part of communicative function was investigated in this study and then it's required in the future to look for changes in different portions of communicative function.
