The effects of Phonics approach

The third grade's English textbook in elementary school of the 7th curriculum contained no reading and writing components which are written language, but only speaking and listening which are spoken language. The purpose of this study is to research the effects of Whole to Part Phonics Approach on the English reading of elementary-school students in terms of reading skills and affective factors.
This study was conducted for sixteen weeks from may to september 2005 except during summer vacation. The subjects were 61 students of two classes in the third grade at S elementary school in Seoul. Students of both classes were at the same(basic) levels of the English through the pre-test with PELT. They were divided into two groups; an experimental group and a control group. A model based on Whole to Part Phonics Approach was applied to the experimental group, while a model based on traditional teaching method was applied to the control group.
A final test was done for the result. It was for English reading skills and the affective factors of English reading after the experiment had ended. Students' affective factors were evaluated by questionnaire, interview and teacher's observation. The program of SPSS ver 12.0 was used for the variables on English reading ability and the affective factors of English reading, Whole to Part Phonics Approach and sexual difference.
These were the main research findings.
First of all, a control group had a better performance in terms of reading skills in English. This shows that Whole to Part Phonics Approach can help students improve their English reading skills.
Secondly, both groups had a better performance in terms of satisfaction, interest, self-confidence and attitude in English reading. This shows that English reading instruction makes a positive effect on students.
Thirdly, a majority of students in the control group showed better performance in terms of satisfaction, interest and self-confidence in Whole to Part Phonics Approach. This shows that Whole to Part Phonics Approach makes a positive effect on students' English reading skills.
Finally, There was no sexual difference on the post-test of English reading skills. But, a little sexual difference was found in an affective factors. This shows that English reading instruction makes more positive effect on girl students than boy students.
Based on these findings, this study concludes that the Whole to Part Phonics Approach is a helpful instructional model, which can be effectively used to improve reading skills in English. Whole to Part Phonics Approach can help students to undertake self-directed English reading more easily. So I propose to use Whole to Part Phonics Approach in the classroom because it is a better approach to reading in English.
In addition, written English textbooks are required for the third grade students in elementary school. They can make students approach to English naturally and undertake to self-directed English reading more easily. Systematic phonics programs are necessary for EFL young learners. They should be designed to suit each grade's level. More training courses for teachers are needed to help them map out a more efficient and widely-applicable lesson model for English teaching with a phonics approach.
