The society in which life conditions and growing environment are changing rapidly everyday requires adaptability from children. Especially to elementary school students, positive social competence is an important requirement because the social competence formed in this period becomes the basis of ability to promptly deal with changes by adapting to new environment, and it becomes the basis of social relationship and behavior when the children grow up. The study has a purpose of providing important data that can help teachers understand students in elementary schools and support students in formation of peer relationship and adaptation of school life by examining difference in children's social competence according to the style of siblings composition. The study also provides basic data that can help successful rearing of parents by investigating parts that need encouragement and support and parts that need lessons through an examination on children's social competence. In order to find out the correlation between social competence and sibling composition of children, the study carried out analyses with different independent variables and the following questions were established based on the study's purpose. First, is there difference in social competence of children depending on gender and age of siblings? Second, is there difference in social competence of children depending on number of siblings? Third, is there difference in social competence of children depending on gender composition style of siblings? Fourth, is there difference in social competence of children depending on birth order of siblings? Fifth, is there difference in social competence of children depending on age difference of siblings? The study selected 2 elementary schools located in Gangwon-do and randomly sampled students in 5th and 6th grade. Total of 965 students were sampled but 945 students were used for the final analysis, excluding 20 students that did not respond effectively. As for the analysis tool, the study modified Iowa Social Competency Scale(ISCS) for teachers to be suitable for children. ISCS is a scale designed to evaluate the general development of children and it consists of 5 sub-factors, which are social activity, hypersensitiveness, stability, non-cooperativeness and cooperativeness. The study carried out reliability analyses for these factors and the non-cooperativeness showed a reliability level of .30, which was the lowest so it was excluded from the final analysis. In order to analyze the collected data, SPSS WIN 11.0 was used and two-way ANOVA was carried out in order to examine social competence of children according to gender and age of siblings. The significant difference in social competence of children according to number and composition style of siblings was verified with t-test. Also, one-way ANOVA was carried out in order to examine social competence of children according to number of siblings, birth order and age difference. When there was significant difference, the study carried out Scheffe's post-hoc. Through these analyses, the following results were obtained. First, as for the social competence by gender, female students(=3.60) showed higher social competence than male students(=3.53) and the difference was statistically significant(F=5.000, p<.05). In the social competence by age, 11-year-old children(=3.62) showed higher social competence than 10-year-old children(=3.51) and the difference was statistically significant(F=12.217, p<.001). As for social competence by sub-factors, the social activity was high with older children and it showed statistically significant difference(F=8.025, p<.01). The stability showed statistically significant difference depending on gender(F=6.746, p<.05) and age(F=6.117, p<.05). Like stability, the cooperativeness showed statistically significant difference depending on gender(F=7.659, p<.01) and age(F=7.754, p=<.01). Therefore, the study shows that female students and older students have higher social competence than male students and younger students. On the other hand, there was no interactive effect of gender and age. Second, the children's social competence by number of siblings is as the followings. The general social competence of children with no siblings(=3.67) was higher than that of children with siblings(=3.56) and the difference was statistically significant(t=2.003, p<.05). Therefore, it can be seen that an only child has higher social competence than a child with siblings. As for the sub-factors, children with no siblings(=3.80) showed higher stability than children with siblings(=3.54) so it can be known that an only child has higher stability than a child with siblings.(t=2.638, p<.01). Also, children with no siblings(=3.67) showed the highest social competence and children with 2 siblings(=3.57) showed the second highest social competence and children with more than 3 siblings(=3.50) showed the lowest social competence. There was statistically significant difference(F=3.850, p<.05). As for sub-factors, there was significant difference in stability; children with no siblings(=3.80) showed the highest stability, children with 2 siblings(=3.56) showed the second highest stability and children with more than 3 siblings(=3.49) showed the lowest stability(F=3.981, p<.05). Therefore, it can be said that an only child and a child with less siblings have high social stability. Third, the children's social competence by composition style of siblings was analyzed by examining social competence of an only child and according to siblings composition, and by examining social competence according to siblings composition. In the examination on social competence of an only child and according to siblings composition, the general social competence declined in the order of only child(=3.67), brother-sister 1(=3.60), sister-sister(=3.58) and brother-sister 2(=3.57) but there was no statistically significant difference. As for sub-factors, there was significant difference in stability. An only child(=3.80) showed the highest stability and this result was followed by brother-sister 1(=3.67), sister-sister(=3.53), brother-sister 2(=3.57) and brother-brother(=3.47)(F=2.997, p<.05). Next, the study looked into the children's social competence according to siblings composition and in result, there was partial difference in social competence according to the composition style. As for brother-brother composition, the older child(=3.59) showed higher social competence than the younger child(=352) but there was no statistically significant difference. Also in sister-sister composition, the older child(=3.64) showed higher social competence than the younger child(=3.51) but there was no statistically significant difference. In sub-factors of sister-sister composition, the older child(=4.03) showed higher hypersensitiveness than the younger child(=3.83)(t=1.991, p<.05). In brother-sister composition(older brother and younger sister), the older child(=3.64) showed higher social competence than the younger child(=3.57) but there was no statistically significant difference. In brother-sister composition(older sister and younger brother), the older child(=3.62) showed no significant difference compared to the younger child(=3.52) but in sub-factors, the older child(=3.68) showed higher stability than the younger child(=3.43)(t=2.184, p<.05) and there was significant difference. Fourth, the analysis on the children's social competence by birth order showed that an only child(=3.61) had the highest social competence and it declined in the order of first-born child(=3.61), second-born child(=3.53) and third-born child or later(=3.48). There was statistically significant difference(F=3.949, p<.01). As for sub-factors, the highest stability was shown by an only child(=3.80) and this was followed by first-born child(=3.60) second-born child=3.51) and third-born child or later(=3.48). There was statistically significant difference and therefore, it can be said that there is difference in children's social competence depending on their birth order. Fifth, the children's social competence by siblings age difference decreased in the order of children with age difference of 2-4 years(=3.58), children with age difference of more than 5 years(=3.57) and children with age difference of 1 year(=3.54) but there was no statistically significant difference. Therefore, it can be known that children's social competence does not vary depending on siblings age difference. The study showed that children's social competence is formed differently according to the style of siblings composition. The study produced significant results related to social competence of children by presenting different variables of siblings composition, and provided sufficient data about the influences of siblings composition on social competence of children. Especially, the study presented new, positive data about an only child that has been treated with negative ideas so it can be considered to be a significant study.
