The TiO₂ thin films and N-doped TiO₂ thin films were deposited by the RF magnetron sputtering method in an Ar gas and an Ar/N2(40%) gas mixture, respectively. After annealing in 400~600 ℃ for 1 h, the properties of TiO₂ the and N-doped TiO₂ thin films were valuated by x-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV spectrometry. The as-deposited TiO₂ thin films are amorphous, transformed into the anatase phase by calcining at 400 ℃. On the other hand, the N-doped TiO₂ thin film contains the amorphous only at 400 ℃, and N-doped TiO₂ thin film indicated the anatase (101) phase by calcining at 500 ℃. UV spectrometry found that the transmittance of all the films was high transparency in the visible range of 400-800 nm. In the TiO₂ films, the absorption edge shifted to long wavelength (red shift). In the N-doped TiO₂ films, the absorption edge shifted to short wavelength (blue shift) as annealing time increased. Also, the absorption edge of N-doped TiO₂ films shifted to short wavelength (red shift) as annealing in 500~600 ℃. The Ti 2p binding energy of all thin films is the characteristic of titanium in its normal oxidation state Ti^(+4), which is a typical state in TiO₂. XPS analysis indicated that the N 1s binding energy of the annealed N-doped TiO₂ thin film was observed to disappear at the high binding energy side of Ti-N bond peak when compared with the as-deposited samples. The Ti-N bond (396 eV) peak in the N 1s binding energy of N-doped TiO₂ thin films explained the successful incorporation of nitrogen into the TiO₂ lattice.
