(Hierarchical Linear ...

Social participation of people with disabilities is regarded as a phenomenon relating with the universalistic approach to them and its relating change in paradigm. In this study, I tried to elucidate the personal factors and supportive environmental factors affecting the social participation of the people with disabilities, based on the universalistic approach.I examined adult physically disabled persons numbered 503, who are living in 16 provinces of Korea including Seoul, Daegu, Busan, Gwangju, Daejeon, Incheon, Ulsan, Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam and Jeju. I used Hierarchical Linear Model to consider both supportive environmental factors affecting the social participation of people with disabilities and individual factors of them. The this study was performed in three steps as follows.First of all, I verified Unconditional Means Model to evaluate if the social participation of people with disabilities differ in each province. According to variance component, intra-class correlation was 0.094. This means that 9% variance in social participation of people with disabilities could be due to the regional differences. In addition, since the hypothesis that the social participation in each province is equal could be rejected (p<.001), I could show the validity of Hierarchical Linear Model on analysis for related subjects.Next, I also tried to verify Unconditional Slope Model to confirm the hypothesis that the level of social participation of disabled people with individual factors of them might be different in each province. According to this, the degree of social participation of people with disabilities in each province differ in each field of education background and occupation (p< 0.001); age, income and outing-time (p< 0.01); gender, period from onset, disability identity (p< 0.05); marital status and body function (p< 0.1). This means that since the social participation of the people with disabilities is not equal in each province, I could show that correlation with supportive environmental factors using Conditional Model. In addition, fixed effect analysis with Unconditional Slope Model showed that body function (p<0.001), disability identity (p<0.01) and family function (p<0.1) exhibited meaningful effects on social participation of the people with disabilities as well. Finally, I tried to verify the hypothesis that the correlation of individual factor and social participation of people with disabilities might be influenced by supportive environmental factor using Conditional Model. According to this, academic career and service utilization level (p=0.058), occupation and set up level of convenient facilities (p=0.088), period from onset and medical support level (p=0.067), body function and medical support (p=0.065) showed meaningful correlation (p<0.1) enough to influence on social participation of the people with disabilities. In this study, integrated viewpoint on the social participation of the people with disabilities could be shown using universalistic approach. The current study could evaluate universalistic approach by empirical verification. This evaluation will be important for related researchers to consider both individual and supportive environmental factors when they planned to induce the social participation of people with disabilities. In addition, the current study could propose the need for re-evaluating commonly performed involvement into supportive environmental factors as well. The significant effect of disability identity on social participation of people with disabilities, which could be proven in the current study, could also show the importance of socio-psychological factor of people with disabilities. Taken together, the current study could successfully elucidate the personal and supportive environmental factors affecting the social participation of the people with disabilities, based on the universalistic approach, which could be the basis for future social work practice.
