With the development of cultural enterprise in the 21st century, musical, a popular composite art fused with drama, music, costume, dance, and lighting, is being valued as the suitable performance for modern people. Moreover, the costume in a musical is an important visual factor that contributes to the level of stage completion by forming the character and overall atmosphere of the whole play. This research is carried out into the stage costume of the musical "Aida," an adapted version of Giuseppe Verdi's grand opera "Aida" from 19th century Italy. The costume of the musical "Aida" from the Walt Disney Company, which is already being staged, is intended to future oriented elements, rather than the traditional features of Egypt. In addition, the costume of the Walt Disney Company is mostly used in the musical "Aida" staged in various countries, and a new research on the costume does not exist. Thus, I designed a new costume which features a modern image with elements of the times of the musical "Aida." For this research, I introduced the image of Egyptian patterns and ornaments, and considered the movements of the musical for the costume. Moreover, through designing and producing the costume to be suitable for the content of the work, I hoped to contribute to the development of the new expressions of traditional costumes and further development of the stage costume of musical. This research consists of theoretic research and actual production of work. Study of documentary records, collection and analysis of overseas performances, news releases, video materials, and internet research were the methods of this study. Based on the theoretical background, I considered not only the concept, characteristic, and history of musical, but also the significance, role of the costume in a musical, and the elements of design. Besides, I also considered the effects of the elements of design on the stage costume, and the mutual relationship between those. I made a study of the stage costume on musical "Aida" with these theoretical backgrounds. To begin with, I studied the Egyptian period and dresses which are background scene of the musical "Aida," and the symbolical meaning of the patterns on the Egyptian ornaments. In addition to this, I included the plot and character analysis of the original "Aida." and the stage costume of the already staged plays. Based on the theoretical contemplation, I tried to expend artful expression area of musical custom by interpreting the musical "Aida" with modern way and developed creative musical custom focusing on functional and rhythmical beauty. Through the process of studying this research, I tried new interpretation on Egypt custom and produced total six works for four characters of "Aida", which are emphasized on modern sense suiting for personality and action of each character. The conclusion I derived from this research is as follows. Firstly, I tried to express a complex image of the tradition showed in the background of the original work and modern sense. Thus, I was able to harmonize the past and the present through re-analyzing the traditional Egyptian silhouette and the patterns of the ornaments of the new-kingdom period. Secondly, I came to realize that the color in stage costume reveals the characters' personality and mental state, and that introducing a suitable color to the situation and surrounding makes it possible to deliver various images. Thirdly, I was able to add more unrestricted dance movements with the use of materials, such as silk, chiffon, and satin. Moreover, with the use of lustrous materials, the silhouette was more emphasized, and the unique qualities of various materials were suitable for the expression of the images of characters. Lastly, incongruous shadow effect of texture by the light and affluent texture can be effectively expressed, and creative musical costume can be designed by developing materials with a variety of techniques such as quilting, beading, tacking, embroidery, fraying, appliqu. As I have studied sofar, in designing a stage costume for musical, the overall comprehension of the musical as a stage art, the circumstances of it, and the relation with the actors' bodies have to be considered. It is a field that needs various professional knowledge, and only when a musical is produced based on such theories, it will be possible to deliver the theme of the play more effectively, and express the various symbolical meanings. I sincerely hope that once the efforts to re-create the opera "Aida" into a musical has actively started, further researches on new stage costumes and experimental musical costumes with the materials improvement are continued.
