The purpose of this study was to explore the right understanding and its application of TGFU(teaching games for understanding) in order to overcome the difficulties occurring in skill-centered game classes which is made most of physical education curriculum and foster students'' ability of problem solving through game activity. For this, literature-based methodology collecting and analyzing the results of its related studies was utilized. The conceptions of TGFU and its practical applications useful to physical educators as a results of the analysis are summarized as follows; First, TGFU model was presented initially by six step model of Thorpe and Bunker(1982) and completed through "Rethinking the Games" written by Thorpe, Bunker, and Almond(1986). It is characterized by game, tactics, cognition, and student-centered learning in comparison with skill-centered game class. After that, several researchers have examined its effects, reinterpreted and transformed its procedural model, and studied its various practical strategies. Moreover it confirmed the model to be interpreted as a curriculum in terms of why to teach and learn the games, what to learn through them, and how to teach them. Second, TGFU model is based on teaching for understanding with constructional philosophy, information processing theory, intrinsic motivation theory, Piaget''s cognitive development theory, Vyogosky''s development theory, and Lave and Wenger''s situational learning theory in process of teaching and learning the games. Third, TGFU model considers the game as an activity for solving problem and classifies it by territorial, net/wall, striking, and target. Each domain in the games consists of content knowledges with its characteristic and rules, tactical knowledge, and knowledge relating to the structure of tactics and tactical complexities. Fourth, TGFU model facilitates the students'' understanding of the games and organizing of its meaning throughout teaching strategies such as an epilog for fostering their making decision, observation and discussion for reflecting their own performance, and intervention representing various possibilities of choice. Fifth, TGFU model is executed by various ways under the influence of a teacher''s renewed philosophy and belief of the game, his satisfaction with the students'' behavioral changes appeared as a result of the class, his knowledge of the contents relating to the subject or its educational environments. Planning and managing a practical class for TGFU model may depend on how physical educators will plan a transformational game and organize the structure of a class.
