(A) Study on the Marketing Strategies for the National Museum of Korea based on the Museum Image Perceived by Visitors : Focused on the Questionnaire Survey of Visitors to the National Museum of Korea원문보기

Contemporary museums face two new challenges occurring from changes in the internal as well as external environmental factors. As an internal factor, with the curtailment of personal contributions and the public assistance operated by the government's supporting fund, schemes for procuring financial resources on their own have to be sought for. As an external environmental factor, along with the emergence of new cultural consumers who want to do a variety of cultural experiencing activities without differentiating high-grade art, popular culture, Western culture and other traditional cultures, museums should now grow out of the existing passive stance that just waits for visitors to come, and cannot survive if not changing to an active attitude that has to attract visitors in a fair competition with all other entertainment organizations under the limited time granted to customers. In this context, this study has analyzed the present image of the National Museum of Korea, the subject organization of this study, based on 'the museum communication theory of Eilean Hopper-Greenhill (1994)' - through various experiences related to a museum, visitors forms an image regarding the museum and this image works as a primary factor in making a decision of visiting the museum - suggests positioning strategies differentiated from other museums and entertainment organizations by analysing this museum image. Major target visitors of the National Museum of Korea based on the results of questionnaire survey and the SWOT (strength / weakness / opportunities / threats) analysis, i.e. the target market, want a high-quality leisure life with their family members and friends. They are also those who have an interest in our history and culture, and who are, in the subdivision criteria of museum visitors, 'occasional visitors' - who visit a museum once or twice a year - and 'frequent visitors' who visit a museum three times or more a year. They put almost the same weight on aesthetic experiences through watching relics in a museum and leisure activities with their family and friends, and also have a high interest on special bluckbuster exhibitions like the Louvere Exhibition this time. As a result of having analyzed the image of the National Museum of Korea in order to decide positioning with this target market as a subject, the current image of the museum was placed in the middle between the positive image and the negative one. Concretely speaking, out of the characteristics of six images, the museum's inherent function, "viewing relics and exhibits," accounted for the most weight in forming a museum image, and the "outer appearance of the building" occupied the most weight in the formation of a positive image. On the other hand, the usefulness and exposure frequency of the museum's publicity media demonstrated the lowest satisfaction level. To begin with, among museum experiencing factors that have an effect on the formation of a positive image are impressive exhibits, kindness of employees, appropriateness of the museum's admission fee, the originative and beautiful museum, the pleasant restroom and lounge, and convenient transportations, while among those for a negative image are the tiredness of explanation on exhibits, inadequate prices for using the restaurants and art shop, insufficient space of the restaurants and lounge, and the lack of the frequency of exposing PR media concerning the museum. This study therefore has decided the National Museum of Korea as the 'museum of the complex cultural space (fun + aesthetic experience) that can meet Korea's best relics along with interesting commentary on exhibits' for positioning in order to strengthen factors such as the 'originative and beautiful building and pleasant convenient facilities' and to improve the 'tiredness of explanation on exhibits' factor having a effect on the formation of a negative image, and suggests positioning strategies through 4P. Firstly, according to the questionnaire survey with regard to product strategies, the satisfaction level of explanation on exhibits is low and it is thus necessary to develop commentary programs on exhibits and make use of commentary media on exhibits. Hence this study proposes an aggressive utilization of up-to-date media like MP3 and PDA as well as each exhibition room's docent being implemented at the moment and also the new installation of a guided tour, such as the 'Samsung Museum of Art Leeum's overall guiding program - Leeum Highlight' program of the Samsung Museum of Art (Leeum) and the 'Guide Tour' program of the Louvre Museum. Secondly, in price strategies, diversified price strategies are proposed through the case study of the Louvre Museum for attracting the revisit of visitors as the number of family-unit visitors increases, as well as various price strategies that differentiate each restaurant of similar price range at present, and in the case of goods at the art shop, goods of high price range for foreign visitors are a mainstream, but it is required to develop various and inexpensive items for domestic visitors. Thirdly, in place strategies, the current cyber exhibition and 'moving museum' of the National Museum of Korea extend the museum's place concept, and as a positive factor, the satisfaction level on the outer appearance of the museum building is high and a 'museum building tour' is therefore proposed so as to strengthen this positive image on the building. And in the case of weekends and holidays as a negative factor, it is needed to expand the space of lounge in the outside of restaurants and exhibition rooms owing to the lack of convenient facilities in the vicinity of the museum. Lastly, in promotion strategies, the awareness on the inherent function (exhibition and educational program) of the museum is high but the one on the function of the National Museum of Korea reborn as the complex cultural space is relatively low, so active PR is needed. As a result of the questionnaire survey, it is therefore necessary to carry out a variety of publicity activities using three dominant information media that respondents chose as information media in a nearly same percentage, including broadcasting media such as TV and radio, the internet, and word-of-mouth effect. Reviewing from the results of this study, the National Museum of Korean is assessed as a world-class level from the aspect of the museum's scale and number of visitors since the reopening, the present image visitors actually feel on the museum is placed only in the middle. In particular, it can be seen that the "relics and exhibits of the museum" accounting for the highest weight in forming the museum image have both positive and negative factors. In other words, the satisfaction level on the exhibits itself is high but the one on the commentary on exhibits is low, thus causing a museum fatigue. Accordingly, in order to position the National Museum of Korea as the 'museum of the complex cultural space (fun + aesthetic experience) that can meet the nation's best relics along with interesting commentary on exhibits', there is a big task that has to establish a positive image on the museum through the development of programs and media for the commentary on exhibits in the future. The limits of this study are that a positive image on a museum works as an important factor in the selection of the museum, but there is a problem that even people actually with the same image on a museum can make a different choice depending upon three kinds of context - 'personal context', 'social context', and 'physical context' - and besides, in assessing the present image of the museum for determining positioning the museum, this study used 'Kotler's semantic differentiation technique', but it has a limitation in analyzing the image of the museum because of insufficient study on other existing theories that measure an museum image, including 'the image measurement model of R. Vaughan'. Studies regarding a variety of theories for assessing the image of the museum, therefore, will have to be preceded in subsequent researches.
