ABSTRACT The Effect of Group Art Therapy on Withdrawal Behaviors of Hearing Impairment Children Bae, Hye-Kyung GRADUATE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL EDUCATION MYONGJI UNIVERSITY Adviser: Kim, Jin-Sook, Ph.D., A. T. R The purpose of this study is to verify the assumption that group art therapy which utilizes the healing power of creative art can provide the children who have hearing impairment and show withdrawal behaviors with opportunities to develop positive relationships and restore their self-esteem, which leads to the decrease of their withdrawal behaviors. Five children with hearing impairment were the subjects. They were all in lower grades of elementary school, i.e., in an environment of inclusive education. A total of 16 sessions of group art therapy was administered. The sessions were held twice a week, from March to November in 2007. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the therapy, several rating scales which measure self-concepts, social developments, affect developments of the children were adopted. Findings on changes between the measures before and after therapy are as follows: First, measures collected from pre- and post-therapy examination indicated that sense of security, inquisitiveness, social and affect development, and social skills of the subjects were enhanced. On the other hand, their dependance on teachers were decreased. It was also revealed that the therapy had positive effects on the improvement of self-concept and self-acceptance of the children. Second, the group art therapy program exhibited positive effects on the improvement of self-esteem and sociability of the students with hearing impairments who had been showing withdrawal behaviors. The results prove that social relationships experienced in group art therapy can be opportunities for children with hearing impairment to enhance self-esteem and sociability and that therefore the therapy is effective in decreasing their withdrawal behaviors.
