For the reliable and continuous operation of humanoid robot, various types of multiple heat sources such as CPUs, motors, operating drivers should be cooled down by using compact and light-weight cooling devices. Non-metallic poly carbonate(PC) cold plates, which were designed to reduce the overall weight of robot cooling system, were composed of a PC cover with different bases of metallic plates. In single-phase study, it was investigated to compare thermal performances among one metallic cold plate and four types of non-metallic cold plates by using a dielectric coolant(distilled water)as the working fluid. In two-phase study, it was investigated to compare thermal performances among two metallic cold plate and two types of non-metallic cold plates by using a dielectric coolant(FC-72)as the working fluid in two-phase circulation with out any external driving force. In single-phase experiment, the mass of PC cold plate is about 55% lighter than that of copper cold plate. But, it was found that copper cold plates showed the higher thermal performance than the PC cold plate in terms of thermal resistance by 32%. In two-phase experiment, the mass of PC cold plate is about 73% lighter that of copper cold plate. But, it was found that copper cold plates showed the higher thermal performance than the PC cold plate in terms of thermal resistance by 3%. Non-metallic cold plates display fairly good thermal performance with more reduced system weight.
